English-speaking bookworms in Erlangen

Anyone else here want to meet up?

LadyRagnell
I'm moving to Erlangen from Munich (although originally from Oregon) and know no one in the town. All of the postings I have read so far are targeted at the singles crowd, or young mothers. I've been there and done that. In my current reincarnation I am an emancipated mother and my time is my own. I'd love to meet other middle-aged bookworms to discuss books and/or exchange recipes. Anyone out there?

Nice welcome to the oberpfalz. I live in Regensburg and from Oregon also... Portland!!! Anyway there is another couple from here from oregon that live in Regensburg although not Toytowners. Oh by the way regensburg is about an hour down the road from you. Anyway Nurmberg has a good expat crowd, larger than regensburg, but feel free when in town to drop in for coffeeand chat it up. Anyways cheers and good luck.

PS I am a huge bookworm although not a middleage woman.

PS II : I miss Powells...

I'm from Portland too! I went to Hillsboro, Sunset and Washington High Schools (Only someone from Portland would recognize just how different those are) and graduated from Portland State University. And yes, I really miss Powell's book store. Are you aware of any good English book stores in Nuremburg, Erlangen or Regensburg? I'm probably not technically middle aged either, unless I live to be over 100.

Well Washington is gone but Sunset and Hillsboro are still around. Yep no place in the world compares to Powells book store especially since their last expansion .

Now back to topic. As for English books stores there are none although there are German book stores with some offerings. Bücher Pustet in the Aldstadt has a decent selection but very crowded on a saturday morning and there is usually no place to sit on the main flloor to preveiw your book.. The plus advantage is that kona coffee shop is located here and make a decent double espresso yet again crowded on a saurday. Jokers about 50 meters to the east has a limited selection and I reinterate limited. There is a book store at the arcaden/HBF but it is hit and miss and mostly misses although comfy couches to again preveiw purchases.

The library here in Regensburg has a very good selection of books to check out although you would do much better in Nüremburg. Anyway good luck. Do not be surprised to see this thread merged with a nurumberg thread.

The largest selection of English books I've seen in Nürnberg is at the Thalia location on Karolinenstr in the Altstadt, but it's still pretty paltry. If you don't want to browse, Book Depository ships to Germany for free.

(I lived in Portland for 9 years and every Sunday I think "damn do I miss going to Powells")

Is anyone aware of any English-speaking book clubs in the area of Erlangen? I'm really going to miss the monthly AAUPW book club in München and would love to find one locally. If no one is aware of one, are any of you interested in creating one? I have no problem hosting... well, once I move in that is. Right now I'm still in München surrounded by packing boxes!

Hello and welcome to Erlangen!

Im new to Toytown but thought it was time to finally jump on board. Ive been here in Erlangen for just under a year... I dont know about any book-clubs, but if you get something started would be interested... Never been in one before but love to read and could be fun. Interesting to meet people and read some great books that I might not have picked up myself!

As far as English bookstores, well I havent gone through most of the smaller ones yet... but can tell you that the Thalia in the main square has an English book section. Its not the biggest in the world by any means, but its better than nothing. (I´ve been living in Italy though where one was lucky to find a decent selection of English books so Im not complaining at all!) Its on the second floor, in the corner :-) At least they have some couches etc and you could stay in there all day I suppose without having to worry about any workers giving you long looks for reading too much.

The Thalia in Nürnberg has a much larger English book selection... The Thalia in the Arcaden doesnt have an English book section that I remember... its a lot smaller, and anyways, the large one is only a 5 min walk away.

Let us know if you find anything or try to set anything up!

I have recently moved to Lappersdorf (Regensburg) and am also looking to join an English reading group. Something like, Books & Bagels - I also have tons of English books which I would like to swap with others. I have been able to really appreciate a much broader scope of authors this way. I would be willing to host the first Books & Bagels party.

Forgot to add that I grew up in Nebraska and have a very large cook book collection (grew up in a Mennonite community) and would love to swap recipes. I miss potluck dinners and would love to organize a potluck dinner in 2009 with expats as well.

I found a great book club sponsored by the International Women's Group in Herzogenaurach. We meet monthly, in the evenings, in various member's homes on a rotating basis. Unfortunately, both book clubs sponsored by the IWG are now full and not accepting new members.

Would anyone be interested in attending a monthly book club DURING THE DAY in Erlangen? There is a bagel shop right across the street from my place and we are conveniently located at a bus stop near FIS. I could host as early as April if there is an interest.
