Sky digibox loss of reception, no signal - Germany

Advice on what might be wrong, how to fix it

Pages: 1 2

A couple of weeks ago my Skydigibox, Thomson DV3, started playing up. Certain programmes showed a message "No satellite signal being received" 29.
I have rebooted the system several times, i.e. press reset button, unplug from mains, wait a minute or two, reconnect to mains, hold button till all four light come on and message appears on screen, but keep getting the same answer. I tried this on three consecutive days and got no where. I have taken my digibox to a mates and also got the same result, "No signal being received" 29!
What options have I got left.
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like the tuner might be broken. repair or get a new one?

Getting it fixed sounds like a sensible option.

Its the Electrolytics on the PSU...

If you want to repair it, satcure.co.uk sell replacement PSUs.

I cant Find the DV3 PSU on satcures website.

I am presuming that this is a standard Sky receiver and NOT the HD receiver.

Can we have more Info on the receiver?

Just guessing, buy the 'DV3' might actually be the 'DVB' logo on the front of the box, like this one. I googled around (not that I'm sat bored at work with nothing to do right now) and a few people have reported problems on avforums and digitalspy with a 'Thomson DV3' and it is actually the model DSI4212. If this is the case, satcure don't do the complete replacement PSU, just a kit to repair it, but these are cheap as chips on eBay, so may be easiest to buy a replacement box.[size=2][size=2]

Just wondering if my new situation matches this. I was having some work done so I had to disconnect my satellite cable from my receiver. It remained switched on the whole two days. Now I've plugged the satellite cable back into it and it says no signal received error 29. I've rebooted, powered off for 10 seconds a few times. Disconnected, reconnected. Nothing seems to help.

It's a fairly new (less than 3yo) white Sky box with the blue sky logo at the front. Could it have burned out it's PSU over the two days it had no sat cable connected? It seems to be quite a coincidence that it's PSU would work perfectly for a couple of years and then on the occasion it has no sat signal for 2 days, it develops a PSU fault when it's reconnected.

I'm about to dig out an old box that I hope I still have to see if that works, just to prove the dish and cabling are still good.

Could your dish have been moved by strong winds or something??

Sounds to me like you have damaged or distorted (maybe causing a short circuit) the connecting cable when you removed and re-fitted it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried re-doing the connectors on the cables and checking the dish alignment. The dish is bolted onto a piece of wood and sits on the balcony. It was professionally aligned and I put tape onto the balcony floor so I know where the two front corners of the piece of wood are. So now aligning it couldn't be easier. It's all looking good from the alignment and cabling side.

Unfortunately I no longer have my old Grundig boxes (I guess I threw 'em out when I got the shiny new Amstrad box). Not sure if I dare plug my girlfriend's German DVB-S box into my dish. In theory it should happily decode the FTA channels but I might totally nuke her channel setup. I guess tomorrow I'll be on the balcony with my sky box and my little 5" tv with a half metre of cable to try and see if I can eliminate my long cable or the dish alignment as the culprit because I can't eliminate the box yet.

Its a difficult one to answer..
Its possibly the dish thats failed.. however, I will plump for the PSU in the Amstrad..

Amstrad PSU are usually an Arse to repair..

Please let us know the outcome..

Shorting the LNB will not affect the PSU in anway as an automatic Overload protection cts in if too much current is requested in some way!

Well, I took my Amstrad and a little TV and two different short cables right next to the dish. Still no signal. So that rules out my normal long (20metre) cable as the issue. I also tried different positions for the dish, nothing doing there either. Then I had the idea to plug my Amstrad into my girlfriends dish by unplugging the cable from the back of her German sat receiver and plugged it into my Amstrad. The signal strength page in Sky-4-6 showed no signal strength or signal quality at all. Even though it's pointing at a different satellite, it should show signal strength.

So if I'm correct, this does confirm the broken Amstrad theory.

Anyone know a place in Munich where I can drive to today and pick one up? Are they expensive?

Silly silly silly!

Now you have a Dish that is off direction and a Bugger Amstra!!

Surely it would have mae more sense to try the GFs sat box on your dish and try to search for some channels!!

This would have proved the reputation of the early Amstrad boxes.!

Anyway..

Bavsat is the answer to your question!

I'm pretty confident the dish is still aligned. Using pencil lines on the floor and taped crosses, the plank of wood on the floor is back to it's original perfect direction. It's certainly aligned well enough to get a big ol' chunk of signal quality. The dish has been nudged before (the g/f putting washing on the balcony) but because of the tape/lines on the floor, it never fails to go back to perfect alignment.

I really don't want the hassle of trying to deal with an annoyed g/f that I've screwed up her channel setup by plugging it into my dish. It's a technisat DVR/DVB-S thing and auto-downloads channel lists and auto-configures stuff. I'm scared it would forget her channel listings, cancel repeat recordings and all manner of weirdness.

Well, I got there anyway. One more Amstrad DRX550 bites the dust.
