Configuring a W701V modem to work with ADSL2+

Making a T-Com unit work in India, for example

Hello,

I had purchased a w701v in Germany and was using it successfully with a T-Com connection in Stuttgart.
But now i have moved to India and wanted to use the w701v with the local DSL connection.
With the DSL connection they provided a ADSL2+ modem. But that has only one ethernet and one USB out.
(ut300r2u modem -> ADSL2+ modem)
I have a PC and a laptop. So I was trying to use the w701v instead of the provided modem.( to use the wireless option)
But somehow i cannot get the w701v configured to work...
When i connect the DSL line after the splitter to the w701v, the green light for the 'T-DSL' keeps blinking.
It does not become stable at all. Also when i start the configuration via ethernet, on the start page, at the bottom it says "DSL nicht verguefbar" - "DSL not reachable/available"

Can anyone help me out here..?

might have to set the vci/vpi setting right...might also have something to do with the POTS system...in Germany the annex people use here is the Annex B which means ADSL over ISDN line. There isnt any POTS system here, so unless it's ISDN too there in India, well tough luck...get a router then, o yeah u cant deactivate the modem on tcom's speedports

Rubbish.
ITU G.992.1 Annex B (commonly, but strictly incorrectly called "ADSL over ISDN") supports both POTS and ISDN circuits as it simply extends the voice bandwidth- ISDN needs 120KHz compared to 4KHz required by analogue services. so the up/downstream data carriers are pushed up the spectrum (and therefore the potential line distance for an Internet connection is reduced). Annex B works fine with POTs connections, or the almost 60% of German ADSL customers who have T-Net/DSL would not be very happy.

Indian DSL providers provide Annex A services, so the W701V which supports Annex B simply won't work. As you see, it does not synchronise as it's looking at the wrong part of the spectrum for a data carrier. There's no solution using this modem/router. Simply buy a new modem/router, or if you already have router from your own provider an WLAN access point.

rubbish?
ITU G.992.1 Annex A ADSL over POTS 12 Mbit/s 1.3 MBit/s
ITU G.992.1 Annex B ADSL over ISDN (IDSL) 12 Mbit/s 1.8 MBit/s

it's no coincidence that the land with mostly POTS conns use Annex A and land with ISDN network use Annex B...

Not quite true - it's possible to hack the firmware to get this hardware to work on Annex A (and with an AVM firmware which offers a lot more functionality than the T-Com one and even an English-language GUI). Check out freetz and Speedport2Fritz.

Having said that, unless you have half a clue, or a friend who has, then you're probably better off getting a new router.

As for the point about Annex A, Annex B and POTS and ISDN - iirc (and if I don't, YL6 will probably correct me shortly), Annex B DSL will work in combination with ISDN or POTS lines (which is why in Germany you can have DSL in combination with ISDN, analogue or no phone line), whereas Annex A only works on POTS lines and not on ISDN lines (i.e. you can have DSL and an analogue or no phone line, but not DSL and ISDN). But then, you probably didn't want or need to know that.

ah yeah it's true this w701v is made by AVM!

well, thanks for shedding light on the topic...
well, i will try to change the firmware of the modem to see if it can work ... anyways the modem is not useable in its current state.
i also saw that there is a switch on tha back of the w701v to choose internal/external modem...
with the switch to the external, will it be possible to use the w701v as a wireless point..?
i.e. use the supplied modem as a 'modem' and then the w701v as an access point. ?
if nothing works theni guess the only option is to buy a new router...

Good point - the V2 W701Vs do have this switch. If you switch out the modem and connect it to your own it should work as a router/access point.
