Using a Fonic SIM card with an O2 Nokia N73

Is it necessary to unlock the phone first?

Hello,

I want to buy a Fonic pre-paid SIM to use with my old Nokia N73 that I used to use with my English O2 contract.
This might be a long shot, but as Fonic uses the German O2 network, does anyone know if I can get away with not unlocking it? Or are O2 UK and O2 Germany totally separate?
According to...

...this model is a "BB5", which means that it's harder/more expensive to unlock.
I have seen some sites that say they can unlock this model, but I'm not sure what to do yet.

Thank you.

UK O2 contract phones are not normally SIM-locked. How long have you had it?

I first got the phone in May 2007.

As an update to this thread, for the record...

I bunged a UK orange pay-as-you-go SIM in my N73, and that seemed to work. It also worked for a colleagues' Spanish pre-paid SIM, but did not work for a different colleagues' Italian pre-paid SIM (that works fine on his phone). So hmmmmm. Yet to track down a German one.
