Founding an English speaking Kindergarten

Advice on starting such a business

Hi,

A friend of mine asked me to ask around as she hasnt got internet access at the moment, so:

She is thinking about starting a business; an English speaking part or full time kindergarten/ playschool/"playgroup without parents" . Anyone's got an idea where and how she should start? What permissions and other stuff do you need? Do you have to be a qualified nursery teacher (she is a qualified social worker)?
If the playschool is only part time does it make a difference in terms of persmissions, taxes, insurance etc?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanx in advance.

Why don't you go to the English playgroup in Schraudolphstr. Schwabing 10:00-11:30 on Friday and ask Jay Fletcher? It may be a way of extending that group.

I've worked at a German/English language Montessori Kindergarten, but if you're not specialised in Montessori, I guess it's not useful info what I'd have wink.gif

Hi,
my experience is very limited as well. However I'd like to add that there certainly is a demand in Munich. Surprisingly there aren't many private kindergardens even though the demand is higher than the supply.

Somehow I suspect that this is due to the fact that the public and non-commercial Elterninitiativen get sponsored by the council. I don't know whether you would get sponsered if you were profit-oriented?
If you don't get any subsidies it will be very hard to compete with the public ones, even if you offer a bilingual education.

The hardest part however will probably be to find a good location. To be able to open a koindergarten in an apartment/house previously used as a flat, you would have to apply for a "Raumnutzungsgsänderung" (change of use) and all neighbours would have to sign they don't mind living next to a kindergarten. This is tough.
Also you'd maybe need a garden, etc...

If your german is good enough you could try http://www.elterninitiativen-muenchen.de, this is a page dedicated to helping new Elterninitiativen.

hope this helps,
love,
kati

ps: I'd take a place (fulltime) if you manage to make it work (and if the location isn't too far off).

Good Luck is my guess! My sister owned a pre-school kindergarten in the UK and I looked into having the same myself a few years ago in the UK.

The big drama was indeed finding premises with usage as private houses were not normally allowed change of usage (dramas with parking etc).

Are there is a distinct lack of cover for 3 years

I would also be interested in a job, if you get a kindergarten formed.
