Opinions on the Nikon D90 camera

Digital SLR, soon to be released

I have been planning on investing in a new DSLR for about 12 months. I have been using analog SLR cameras for a long time but I have been moving closer and closer to digital ever since I purchased a good negative scanner earlier this year. In my research into good DSLRs I noticed the imminent release of the Nikon D-90.

Although on the pricey side it seems to be a big jump up from the D-80 and certainly from the D-60. Sauter had a hands on display yesterday which I happened upon and it was very impressive indeed. I found a good preview here at dpreview.com.

I know that some TT'ers are pretty nifty when it comes to DSLR's and I would love to hear what you think before I take the plunge.

Having a family and the desire to take nice photographs, the unique movie mode makes it especially interesting as I will not carry 2 big cameras around, missing out on various opportunities.

Thanks for the responses. I found that website very helpful too Sinderbox. Unless I come across some major drawbacks in the next few days I am going for the Nikon D90 Kit with the VR 18-105 lens. smile.gif

As a digital newbie does anyone have recommended memory cards?

Although a committed Canon fan, at the entry and pro-am levels there's not so much between the different manufacturers – it's only at the pro level that Canon rules. I'm sure you'll be very happy with a Nikon. However, Canon are about to release the EOS 50D, the successor to the highly-successful 40D. It will rule the pro-am market for the next couple of years. So you may want to consider that option, or the option of picking up a 40D now that the price will plummet.

As far as memory cards go, I can highly recommend the SanDisk Compact Flash Extreme III 8GB. 8 gigs sounds a lot, but if you're shooting in RAW or taking video, then you will be glad you have it. The current price on Amazon of €38 is very competitive.

I would go with one among the fastest rather than with one among the biggest.
Sooner or later you will really appreciate the uninterrupted continuous shot even if at the beginning you lean to think it is not a big deal. This might be even more so in video mode (but I do not really know).

What's the price you've got?

The basic kit (Nikon D90 Kit AF-S DX 18-105 mm) comes in at €1189 from Nikon or Sauter. I also found a deal for €1031 on guenstiger.de, but I am wary of what the catch might be.

As to memory cards I read that the video function eats up about 400MB a minute, thats 2GB for five minutes of footage. I will be looking at the 8GB+ range regarding size. Concerning speed, I am pretty clueless. Is 30mb/sec standard or better than standard?
