Where to buy British things in Saarland

Books, magazines, food, etc.

Sarah Jane
Hi all!

I am a British woman living in Homburg, Saarland. I was wondering if anyone knew of any shops locally, preferably in Saarland, where I can buy British food stuffs, magazines and books? I know I can get them in Frankfurt but that's quite far away. I would much prefer somewhere a little closer to home.

I am also wondering if any other English speakers meet up in Saarland, for a chat, a drink, etc? I would be interested to find out.

Another thing is that I was wondering if there are any English speakers in or around Homburg?

Thank you
Sarah

I am also living in Homburg, and I have not seen much in the way of British (or real American) goods. Maybe one of these days Aldi will have a British week?

Hi. In Saarbreucken there is a Newsagents on the basement floor of Karstadt, selling all sorts of international papers, including british ones. For english chocolate (cadburys) places like Real are selling these (at last).

Doesn't your local Indian shop have baking soda and baking powder and Bird's Custard mix? The ones here do.

More general suggestions here: http://www.toytowngermany.com/wiki/British..._American_foods

Thank you, Garibaldi72 and Gen! I shall check the newsagents in Karstadt next time I'm in Saarbrucken. I haven't seen any Indian shops near here though there are Asian shops selling mainly Chinese things. I haven't seen custard or baking soda in the Asian shopts but that's not a problem as the vanilla pudding packet mixes that you find here work just as well and baking soda/powder is easy to find here too. I mainly want British magazines and newspapers though it would be nice if I could find things like Marmite and Branston Pickle locally so I wouldn't have to go to Frankfurt to get them. We recently ordered them online from a shop somewhere in Germany and they were delivered next day so that was great. I think we'll get from there again. I will look out for Indian shops though.

Thank you all for your replies!

Ah. I've changed your title to emphasize the reading material. Have you tried your local city library for books? Even if they don't have many themselves, they should be able to do interlibrary loan and that's still cheaper than buying... and since Homburg has a university, their library should be worth checking out too.

Oh and your http://www.daf-saarpfalz.de/ might have infos too. It's the Deutsch-Amerikanischer Freundeskreis but worth a phone call.

Hello everyone.

I cannot offer any help on where to buy anything as I only moved here at the end of last year, so I am just learning my way around.

I am currently living in the Homburg area, but will be moving to Saarbruecken at the end of this month. I would love to meet new people if any of you are ever out on the town.

I would love to hear back from you!

There seem to be enough of us to start our own little uk shop in the area! As ryanair fly from Zweibrücken to stansted, it is cheap enough to have a day trip and get your supplies ! (ah sarah you just did!! ) Hope you had a good time.

I have a regular troupe of visitors coming from UK if that's of any help. They always bring the shopping with them.
