Dried Glühwein mixture

Where to buy?
Eric the Hamster
in the days when I had a german girlfirend, she bought my parents some gluehwein mixture (all the herbs etc dired in a packet) my parents are now asking me to bring some more back with me. I have looked a little but now only have a very short time being in munich to find this. anyone know a place where i can buy this and even better a selection of different ones. I would prefer not to call my ex and ask her! laugh.gif

Thanks in advance

We've got them in Tengelmann in Garching (or at least we had about a week ago). Failing that, how about the Tollwood Market? If you can stand the crowds they have all sorts of stuff like that.

I've seen glühwein mixtures sold in teabags in öko stores. Not sure if this is what you mean but if so, they're usually found in the tea section.

If it's the tea-bag stylee things you want just ask for Glühfix in any supermarket.

Can anybody tell me what spices are usually in the Glühwein mixes? I've got an idea but I'm not completely sure. Lazy me, not to just go to the store and read the labels, but hey, the stores are closed now anyway. It would be fun and probably cheaper to make your own. ETH--if you're a crafty sort you could personalize the gift this way.

i got the tea bag ones (at the arabella park mini-mal next to the glüwein), but i'm not exactly sure how to use them. can anyone tell me how many bags per bottle? thanks. smile.gif

There are plenty of varieties. Type Glühwein recipe into Google and you'll see lots.

Toast, treat it like a teabag but instead of using warm water use warm wine. Pretty straightforward.

i also saw some in the herb stand at Viktualienmarkt in little bags.

for making it i use suagr, cloves, cinammon, orange and lemon peel and some orange juice. Generally I do it as trial and error and seems to turn out ok.

ok, cool. (yes, in retrospect, it was a stupid question.wink.gif) i guess it'll take a few to fill up a slow cooker- good thing i got 50 of them...

keydeck--yes, googling would be the obvious thing to do. But like I wrote, lazy me. wink.gif

mellelisa--thanks for sharing your recipe. smile.gif

I saw some at Tengleman

Just out of curiosity...what kind of Wine do you mix it with (red I'm assuming) But there are so many kinds of wine!! Maybe it tells you on the packet??? blink.gif

Cheapish red wine. You need something not too thin so some kind of bargain full-bodied Spanish (a Rioja-type as true Rioja will be a bit too tasty for this) or as Delia Smith suggests here - a Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvingon shouldn't break the bank either. As well as some Glühfix teabags, some extra cinnamon sticks or citrus peel (take the white zest off) swimming about in the mix will also do good.

Was not really looking for a tea bag solution, more dried ingredients you put into the wine directly

Click on my Delia link then!

In the US they sell canisters of mulling spices, it's basically the same thing. Maybe they have that in England as well. But I guess that would kill the fun of bring them something special from Germany.

@Katrina, Thanks for your help, I (and my mum even better) how to make it with actual fresh ingredients but we are lazy and the mixture we had was actually very nice (with a couple of fresh ingredients added)

I bought some dried gluhwein mixes the other day for my brother. You can buy them in Tenglemans (i bought them in the one in Kolumbusplatz, but have seem them elsewhere), it's either 3 or 5 sachets in a pack for 59 cents. Bargain. Plus beats hauling an actual bottle of the stuff home for the holidays...
hope this helps

Eric,
you can also get this in larger UK supermarkets. Just stick extra cinnamon sticks and orange peel in the wine and the job is a good 'un.
It contains coriander seed, allspice & nutmeg. So add a couple of whole cloves and maybe a couple of slices of ginger too? Entirely up to you (I love ginger though).
