Hey does anyone know where you can get some really stinking cheese?! I was thinking of the Viktualienmarkt?

Cheers...

Käs Eck here in Großhadern knocks you back outta the door when you try to walk in... man that stinks blink.gif

Yep, there's also a Käs somethingorother just opposite the Ostbahnhof, next to Travel overland. Otherwise Kaufhof, downstairs. No need to do Viktualienmarkt, it's soooo expensive (but I love it...)

Viktualienmarkt has several cheese stands.
Although it's overpriced, you get some really good stuff, and they let you sample before you buy, which is nice.

I bought a few good stinkers there this past weekend.

THe number one Specialty Cheese store ranked in Bayern is found in Erlangen, Käse Ecke. It is a drive, but they actually cater to most of the specialty restaurants in Germany.

Thats the one brokenem - Käse Ecke - I can see it from my window here in Großhadern, so there must be a few about. If it was warm and the wind was in the right direction... blink.gif

Sounds like you're probably having a nibble right now - but to add to Viktualian markt - there's also Kafer - bloody expensive but if you like cheese/food then do go - people will say Kafer is shit and just an expensive hoax - but they have no money or taste - it is wonderful food and they have a fantastic selection of cheese there - they'll give you slivers to taste so just take your time...

me big smelly cheese fan...

Best cheese shop I have found is on the Elisabethplatz markt - much better than anything on the Viktualienmarkt.
Gen
kaufhof am Marienplatz has lots of the same stuff as Elisabethmarkt, for those of us on the south side of town.

I dont know about a shop but in Solln there is a Friday street market and the cheese guy has some REALLY stinky cheeses. I mean STINKY. blink.gif

I've been going to Toelzer Kas Laden on Viktualienmarkt - near the really big cheese shop opposite the beer garden. It's not cheap but good quality so reasonable value for money. Viktualienmarkt is the same as most places - if you walk into the most obvious shop with the glitziest display it'll be expensive, shop around and you get better value.

Here's to our cholesterol levels!

Okay peeps...where are the really good cheese shops in Schwabing (north end...Nordbad area)? Got a hankering for a lovely pecorino. I will give Elisabethplatz a try...but I reckon it ain't gonna be that cheap (as cheese never is). Just wondered if you all know of any hidden gems in the area...

Also...what hard cheeses do you recommend? Nothing stinky or moldy hehe.

Bergkäse...Mmmmm. Doesn't smell much, but if it's nice and mature it tastes gorgeous.

Used to live in the area and nothing springs to mind except the Karstadt, who have an alright selection.

I second Karstadt.
Amazingly enough Lidl in the Schleissheimerstr. has two types of Pecorino in at the moment, an aged one and a standard model.
I'm pretty pleased with the aged one and for a sizeable chunk for about 3€ it is worth a go. It has the official DOP (Denominazione d'Origine Protetta - comes from a specific protected area) certification.
Also love Bergkäse.

@Katrina
Mmm aged pecorino is quite nice. That is the one we normally procure from the little shop in Giesing...but that is kinda far for me to travel for cheese (or is it...how far SHOULD one go for cheese?)

What was it that we were chowing down on at Weinwelt? Was it Grana Padano or something else? Would also like a nice chunk of that. Bless you for having a pocket knife ph34r.gif

Mmm...tomorrow is cheese shopping day biggrin.gif
Katrina
That was an aged Pecorino from Emporio Italiano on the Volkartstr.
But I've been eating the Lidl one for the last 2 weeks (they also have chunks of Grana Padano too) and I'm amazed at how good it is. Really worth a go at the price (especially as it has the DOP stamp).
OOOO This site from the Italian Trade Commission has lots of info about the various types.

whilst working in Switzerland many years ago, i came across the most minging cheese i have ever smelt or tasted ...sort of pukey old feet flavour ..this is Appenzeller and specifically the Rasskäse version

..and there I was thinking I loved all cheese. My dreams were shattered. Any road, you sometimes see Appenzeller in places like Karstadt ..if it doesn't make you gip, you'll still find the aroma somewhat special ! Personally, I prefer to stick to Extra Mature Stilton and Cashel Blue ..and other world cheeses i come across on me travels ...
