Where did the "Rate" button spring from all of a sudden? Another one of EB's devious inventions, it seems...

I just tried to rate your post as bad English, but nothing seems to have happened!
Try rating it "funny, useful and interesting" instead.

An "other" option with a fill in the blank would be good.

Or an "Absolute Shite" option.

A mass-rating function for "Bad English" would be good, but otherwise this seems like the kind of short-lived idea that will soon head the way of the Karma buttons. Still, if it makes people reread their post or think twice before clicking "Add Reply", then it would be a good thing. I just don't think it will have that effect though.

Can one rate one's own posts?
If so, I predict major ballot box stuffing

Edit: I just rated my own post "funny and interesting" as a test ... so where can one see the results pile up?
Edit edit: When all else fails, read the instructions:
QUOTE
All forum members may rate all posts made to the chat forum. One member may attribute up to two rating qualities per post. Although general statistics are gathered about which posts are funny, interesting, or off-topic, etc., the individual ratings made by members remain confidential. No one will be able to see which posts you have rated nor how you rated them. Read more about it in the forum: Post rating function

The forum does seem to be split between those who give a shit what they put out there and those that don't.
I just can't be arsed to spend the extra time rereading and fixing my posts to impress some internet lame-o who spends far too much time dissecting my posts. If I happen to catch a mistake then sure but working on a post as if what I write actually matters, I can't be bothered with that.

It looks like it could replace the Report button - maybe it's a useful tool to contact the mods with.
Needs a 'moral judgement based on little or no information' option.

Geezz...way too much work there.
I personally was a big fan of the Karma button.

The rate button will eventually change to a small pop-up menu. Much quicker and easier, less work involved to rate posts. The programming is pretty complicated for that though, hence this interim solution.

And a "opinion based on no actual experience or knowledge" one to go with it.

Whilst not seeing who rated what as what is one thing, perhaps there will be a way to see in general terms how posts are rated. Perhaps a counter in brackets beside each of the options available.

Well I can see a benefit to the mods in that it would perhaps bring to their attention posts which otherwise might be missed.

Can we have an

Is anybody actually using this feature? Without any obvious way to view the results, I don't think very many people are going to spend time evaluating each post.

I think it's the kind of feature that'd be better off in a "Post options" button, conglomerated with other functions as a dropdown, hypothetical functions like "Bookmark post/Favourite", "Copy content to clipboard", "Save attachments", things like that.

When he's right, he's right. It is a tad gimmicky alright. I still don't quite yet see how collation of this kind of data majorly benefits anyone.

I reckon it's just a way for the admins to collect statistics on which posters are the good or bad guys. We don't see the karma, but the admins do.

Colonel Nathan R Jessup from a Few Good Men. He knows that you can't handle the truth.
I just spent 11 minutes reading up on the quote I used without knowing Jack Nicholson's character's name. Or that it was a play before it was a movie.
A Few Good Men (Wikipedia)
Colonel Genssop though... I prefer General Gen. Must work on my promotion.

Well only one step upwards from General Gen is Supreme Leader for Life Gen. Dangerous waters.
Speaking of dangerous waters, I think I smell rain -- must be off home before I get caught in it. I think I'll rate this "off topic" and see what happens.
Edit: Ha, you can give a post two ratings, so I rated myself funny and off topic.

@ Gen - for the second time I rated a post. Yours about A Few Good Men being a play was interesting as although it's a good adaption the movie is very enclosed and word-heavy. An obvious sign of play-to-movie.

On the +ve karma side, how about an "insightful" option?
In light of the recent spam attacks, I wonder if the forum's own Report button should be retired / relinked to go to the Rate page? I think the Rating of individual posts as spam is likely to be automatified sometime, and the Reporting just sends a PM to the mods... and if no mod is on duty, that doesn't do anything and it never will, as a person has to read the text field. If the Rate page also had a short text box, it could replace Reporting completely.
