What insurance to use for claiming laptop damage

Accident at home, use Hausrat or Haftpflicht?

I got my self a Hausrat and Haftpflicht insurance couple of months back thinking I may never have to use it. But couple of days back my daughter slammed my three year old laptop’s lid down and damaged the display. Now I can barely see what I write. Though the laptop works fine otherwise.

Can any one suggest which of the above two insurance will cover it and up to what extent.
MichiS
None of your insurances will cover it. But maybe you have a good friend with a Haftpflichtversicherung who tossed down your laptop.

Hausrat covers home contents insurance damaged by water, fire, storm and burgalers. Also smolder damage.Haftpflicht covers any damage you or your family inflict on a third persons property. So no you have no cover on this one unless the laptop is still under warranty and in Germany your warranty is invalid after 2 years on electrical goods
Starshollow
its just like Mik says and MIchiS suggested: your Huasrat-insurance would only have covered you if the lap-top was damaged through leaking water from the neighbour over you or damaged through fire, stolen, whatever. Your Haftpflicht would cover you if your daughter had damaged someone else's laptop while visiting or so. But you can not cover yourself against self-inflicted damage. Only (slighly illegal) way is to find someone else who has a Haftpflicht and let him say that he damaged your property...

Versicherungsbetrug / False insurance claims is a serious crime ... at least in Germany

German Criminal Code

QUOTE
Section 265 Abuse of Insurance

(1) Whoever damages, destroys, impairs the usefulness of, gets rid of or gives to another a thing which is insured against destruction, damage, impairment of use, loss or theft, in order to obtain for oneself or a third party insurance benefits, shall be punished with imprisonment for not more than three years or a fine if the act is not punishable under Section 263.

(2) An attempt shall be punishable.

QUOTE
Section 263 Fraud

(1) Whoever, with the intent of obtaining for himself or a third person an unlawful material benefit, damages the assets of another, by provoking or affirming a mistake by pretending that false facts exist or by distorting or suppressing true facts, shall be punished with imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine.

(2) An attempt shall be punishable.

I think Starshollow was being sarcastic.

Well, well, well ... where´s the irony/sarcasm in this advice given by a professional independent insurance broker and an official TT advertiser?

Taken slightly out of context there Mr. Miwild ,and for the record, I’m pretty sure any HALF intelligent friger knows it is ”ever so slightly illegal “ to defraud on insurance but thanks again for the wonderful links
Starshollow
miwild: no professional would ever seriously recommend to undertake insurance fraud of any way or kind. However, this issue was on the table already and I tried to handle it in some overall sarcastic way, knowing well that this happens all the time and that insurances don't care much about it if it does not happen all too often and if the damage claims are under a certain level which differs from insurance to insurance. If it happens too often or becomes to obvious, the insurance will - even if they don't find you guilty for fraud - cancel the contract eventually and you will have a hard time to find another insurance to accept you. That alone should make everyone very cautious, what kind of claims to file and under what "claim-constructions".

Looking at the wording again: yes, I did not hit the sarcastic level there pretty well this time.... so I take your criticism as something I should take under more consideration in the future. tks for that (and I mean that, no sarcasm there!).

I have an separate "Elekronikversicherung" which covers just this type of occurrence - in fact anything that happens to electronic articles however it occurs. It paid out a couple of years ago when I tipped a full cup of coffee of a laptop which went up in smoke. It's not cheap though - about €350/year for €10.000 of cover...
Starshollow
this "Elektronik Versicherung" is usally a part of an office/business content insurance... rarely seen or asked for within a private insurance, though.

Although this may well now be the best solution, this is still a depressing comment from a signed-up member of the throwaway society. "See if it can be repaired" should really be the first step.
