2008 Trachten trends - Munich

What's hot and what's not for this year's Wiesn

Katrina
While Tracht (traditional Alpine dress) is as traditional as the Alps themselves, it can also be trendy with different colours and styles promoted year on year.
So what's in store now for Oktoberfest 2008?

Coming soon to billboards near you (well, if you live in Munich), the Loden-Frey Wiesn-Dirndl des Jahres combines a classic style of a tiny four leaf clover print with fashion colours such as lilac, pink, kiwifruit green and nutella brown, red with fir green, rose pink with cherry, blue, black and navy... Yours for 299€ all in.

Different lengths are offered as prinzipiell ist auch heuer wieder erlaubt, was gefällt (wear what you like), but although minis (aka pornodirndls) to maxi lengths are there, this year, going on what's in store, the so-called 1960s length is proving popular.
Playfully just covering the knee, it's youthful but never mutton.

Also new for 2008 are ranges from Wiesnwirtinnen Nika Schottenhammel (Schottenhamel tent) und Sabine Lanz (previously Käfer), available at Loden-Frey.

Angermaier are also going for the tone-in-tone look with pink and lilac, grass and apple green, pink plus brown, mango and orange... as well as the more usual traditional colours.

Ladies looking for Lederhosen will get lucky at Ludwig. Beck that is. From Almsach at 250€+ to be worn with Janker and a funky t-shirt for coolness. Beck also have a spectacular drindl with an apron made of peacock feathers - to die for but also not Wiesn-tauchlich.
But oh so pretty!

Happy shopping!

Just to let you know...Angermaier just opened up a new shop on Hohenzollernstr. We just saw it last night.Probably more convenient than the shop on Landsbergerstr.

Lovely!

oh thanks Katrina!
i love tracht and would wear my dirndl daily (well, preferably a few of them)- i wish i were there the clover leaf print and the length sound nice!
Katrina
Also saw a lot of really beautiful black dirndls with a shimmery slate grey apron, the embroidery in slate and the lacing hooks in silver.
For a more conservative dirndl, it's absolutely stunning, especially for redheads. Will also photograph well.

The see-through apron or shirt (whether just the sleeves or the whole thing under a tightly-laced bodice) are also flying out of the stores, not just in white either. Black blouses, sheer or lace, are very popular for a more latin or gothic look.

at Schustermann and Borenstein's Trachten sale yday there were a lot of bargains to be had.
they were selling a lot of fish-net tights which look nice with dirndln.
also these style bags for 29€ which I think are rather groovy:

C&A also have a pretty young and fun denim dirndl - it's not trad by any means, but on the right gal will look right. And costs around the 100€ mark complete.

ReSales, Wiesn Tracht & Mehr and Wirkes can also be worth a look for cheaper alternatives as well as Kleidermarkt im Tal.
Wirkes has some really great stuff - good place to find branded Tracht a bit cheaper.

If you don't mind me asking in this thread...I'll be heading to the O-fest for the first time in ages. What's appropriate attire for a decidedly non-Bavarian Gent?
Moonboot
C&A do good push-up bras too! they have them in the Trachten dept.

need to pop there actually, must get Mr.Moonboot some proper shoes, he wore his work shoes last year and they got ruined

Hmm. It's really up to you, your crowd and where you're going.

Pig Pen? No undies, old or silly slogan t-shirt, shorts, shoes you never want to wear again.
Käfer, Hippodrom or Schottenhamel tent on a reservation? Maybe a checked or linen Trachten shirt along with your jeans up to full Tracht. Some parts are a little more dressy and while it won't be a problem not to be in Tracht, a bit of effort will go down well.
Most other places: wear what you like. Although few will complain if you want to join in and buy the full Lederhosen - if you do, take time, be comfortable with them and be prepared to drop cash. But many ladies love them (me included!).

Would the others agree? That's sort of my rule of thumb.

I'm thinking I don't want to show up in spanking new Lederhosen. I'd probably look like a Frankfurt banker just down for the weekend. Dead giveaway.
Gen
Yes to Katrina's summary. Lederhosen on a fella are 99% of the time great. Even new Lederhosen don't look that new, and enough people buy them new -- who cares. You can get them used as well.

Ahem, *nervous laugh* What sort of shoes does one wear with Lederhosen? I gather Italian loafers are a no-go?

Anyone of the dirndl's pictured above should be suitable

Seriously just wear jeans and a tshirt, if you want to look a [s]right fnucking numpty[/s] bit bavarian you could get one of these:

traditionally Haferlschuhe (see photo) but many people where hiking boots.

Colour and type of leather (Glatt- oder Wildleder) will depend on your Lederhosen.
Katrina
In jewellery, one huge trend is for Brezn pendants, whether on velvet chokers or on silk bands. Silvery or gold, the choice is yours.

And there's a wide price range, from the cheap and cheerful Strass, to solid silver or gold.

Charm bracelets are also very popular, why not pep up yours with Thomas Sabo's Alpine collection?

Lederhosen are definitely hot. I think the used ones look better than new ones (and they cost less too) -- BUT one has to get authentic ones. And with the right kind of braces/suspenders. Not the full-on trouser length or the hotpants shortie shorts. Don't forget about the Wadelwarmers (sort of socks for just your calves). Hiking boots look kind of tacky but they're better than other normal shoes if one doesn't want to buy the right bavarian shoes.

As for drndles: I haaaate those trashy short drndles (anything above the lower part of the knee). What's sad is that it's now not just tourists wearing them.

ugh

My favourite is Susanne Rosenblatt!...does that count as a dirndl!?

Moonboot - I'd much rather have this Versace corset bag Want to donate it to a good cause?

Mr.Mosh
what about for men? Because I need a new trachten shirt.
emmah

Here you go: I have the dirndl, but what shoes to wear?

Trachtenschuhe
Katrina
Another of the big trends this year: the Herzl-Tasche
Certain Anglemaier branches have sold out already and they seem to be flying off the shelves elsewhere.
Quite practical too as they can be secured to a drindl apron easily and the main essentials fit in too.

The Trachtenherz site also does pretty cool name badges for corporate events... well as cool as a name badge can be, right?

Assuming I have no intention of buying Trachtenschuhe that I only wear three or four times before abandoning, is it ok to wear Converse for comfort or are little old grannies going to hit me with their [s]rhythm[/s] walking sticks?
Katrina
Not got any ballerina pumps?
DDBug
Even hiking boots will work, depending on the dress.
Moonboot
C&A have loads of Mary-Jane style shoes that are quite cheap. mine are leather and have rubber soles and they were only 19€.
I wear em for work too.
llees
Not got any ballerina pumps?

Actually, I don't think so. I have flip flops, work shoes, a pair of knee high boots, climbing shoes and two pairs of impractical heels. My work shoes are vaguely Tracht friendly but heavy.
planetmoni
personnally, i would not recommend ballerina pumps or anything too delicate, at least for the oktoberfest. your shoes will get dirty with jucky stuff (it will be worse if it is raining...) and people might step on your feet.
hiking boots (not my favourite) or any black shoes are ok.
Katrina
For those a little more flush with cash, Jimmy Choo has just opened on the Maxilmillianstr. and has a special Wiesn-shoe.
Pic is in today's SZ, sadly not online - they are 12cm high patent shoe with small platform front, ribbon lacing and come in midnight black, rose, red and green.
Also in the same article (page 9, SZ Extra, Oktoberfest), there's the new Falke special hold ups with Bavarian seams - blue and white with a white and blue hold up. Cute!
llees
From the looks of it, I'm going to be turning up in wellies.

When Jimmy Choo makes those, then we'll talk.
