Just curious. Normally, I do a grocery shop at Penny for the things that I can get cheap-cheap there (bread flour, juice, pasta, etc.) and then go to Minimal. If you ask me,
Minimal is the best grocery store in town. What do you think?

I think most people will tend to go where ever is close to them generally. There's no Minimal near me, so I don't go there. There's a very nice
Tengelmann near me, so I go there, even though there's Plus which is cheaper, just another 4 minute walk away. When I want a bigger selection or am buying a lot of stuff, I go to Metro.

I thought Metro was only available to business owners. Am I thinking of the wrong place?

I go to Penny first for the basics too but, as Showem says, that's more because it's the closest rather than the cheapest.
Otherwise I go to "Other", viz HIT, precicely because of its bigger selection.

That's a tough one. Once a month we do a big Walmart run...for chicken and hackfleisch and stuff that is cheaper and bigger and tougher to get elsewhere. We have staple overstock items in our cupboard.
Our weekly shop is MiniMal...a nice, shiny, new one and I have not yet been disappointed as I used to be when it was a Spar.
When Spar was being turned into MiniMal in the summer we shopped at Hit (it is fairly big and probably should make the list for those who live in Haidhausen).
If I am in town and in need of necessities I go to Kaufhof at
Stachus.
Tengelmann and HL are only for necessities near home.
When I used to commute into HBF I would pick up essentials at
Hertie.
I have never been to an
Aldi,
Lidl, Plus, or Penny. I am not a shopping snob...just that there really aren't any located conveniently near me (that I know of). I have heard I am missing out and will one day find out why.
Phew...I get around...shopping.
Aldi for the big basics shopping (saves a mint shopping there!), MiniMal when I want something special, and the little turkish market on the corner for milk, eggs and fresh produce.

@ showem - is it worth shopping at Metro? I thought you could only get huge amounts, like a 2kg cheese for example.

I go to SPAR at Rotkreuzplatz - the supermarket with the nicest staff in Munich.
They even say hello to me in the street and still ask how the plants are doing (plants that I bought over 6 months ago, the plants are doing great, my office looks like a jungle).
If the queues are too long, they will open a new till (unlike Tenglemann), their
Vinzenzmurr butchery is great (their staff always ask how I am even if I just walk past the counter without buying anything).
I love my SPAR!

Well, sometimes, yes, it really is worth shopping at Metro, but not always. You can get smaller amounts, but the difference in the price sharply decreases if you get "normal" size portions. I'd say
Aldi is just as cheap in that case, but the range is better at Metro and for brand name stuff (
which you don't have to always buy in bulk), it's usually cheaper. But you have to compare. Like I said, for a big shop, it's great.

My local
Tengelmann sucks (as I think all people's local Tengelmanns probably do) but it is still better than any
Aldi,
Lidl, or PLus I've been to. HL seems aight though.
/Wishes Wal-Mart were closer.

Isn't MiniMal and HL the same ? Does one not own the other ?
I only really have a MiniMal near me, unless I want to walk a long way. So really depends what I need to buy, and what I MUST buy.

we get our big stuff, like dog food, paper towels and toilet paper, on infrequent runs out to real. locally we shop in mini mal or at the turkish grocer across the street, because it is a really nice shop with lots of ethnic stuff and the staff are friendly. i also go to the local italian greengrocer because he flirts with me. i like the asian market at hohenzollernplatz. in addition, i shop at hertie and karstadt too even though i know i am overpaying in both places. hertie has hellman’s mayo, which thrills me to no end. whenever i am in plus, i feel as if i am shopping in the old soviet union. the one near us is a half stocked mess.

Yep, HL and minimal are both Rewe brands, however I believe Rewe is slowly moving HL markets to the minimal brand. Makes sense to me, as both brands were positioned at more or less the same price points and as the same sales channels.

I agree with DW. His local
Tengelmann sucks. I shop there as well sometimes. I've been going to the LIDL up the road on Schleissheimer and it's damn good. Great prices and OK selection. They even have potato/hash brown thingys for under 1€. Perfect!!

I'm sorry Katrina...but is that in Munich?! That's it, we are moving!!! I am now adding
Neuhausen as a choice place to live. Say hello to you in the street?! Wow...I barely get a glance up from the register...unless I am too slow in putting the groceries on the conveyor or I am not packing them up fast enough...in which case I get more than a glance.
Don't tell my husband about 2kg cheese at Metro or we will have to start a business.

Actually, I would be interested in seeing if the prices are any better at Metro. Okay, here is a few things from their weekly specials. People can then compare it to their local place and tell me and everyone else if it's cheaper or not really.
20x0.5L or 24x0.33L Warsteiner beer = 10.94 plus Pfand.
Turkey breast, no skin, no bone = 4.06 a kilo (in approx. kilo packs)
Ah, one people might know the price of immediately: Dr. Oetker Ristorante pizza = 1.70
Emmi Schweizer Käsespezialität Appenzeller (sliced cheese) = 1.92 for a 125g pack. Don't think that's cheaper.
Hohes C = 0.99 for a litre bottle
Barilla pasta sauce = 1.38 for a 400g glass

I miss Waitrose

. AEZ - my local, doesn't even come close.
we go to Metro too. Selection's the word here. I just asked hubby about the prices and he says it's not that much cheaper, but they have 10% fat yogurt which you otherwise have to make a special stop for in Turkish stores, a complete fresh fish section, Argentinian steaks... and Häagen Dazs right in the regular freezer containers. Mmm.
