we are arriving in germany soon, i'm from EU, my wife too, but from what i understand i need to:
1) go to Rathaus or police station for Anmeldung after i find an apartment.
and that's pretty much it? (my company is going to to take care about my work permit)
is this the only official thinig one has to do after arriving in Germany for longer time?
and one more question - how is that possible that i need german bank account to register in some residental agency, to find a new apartment, but to register bank account i need an address (probably not hotel address).
Isn't that a little strange? closed circle..
I'm planning to make an account in Sparkasse or whater it is called, because i suppose they won't need my address. but i'm not sure if it will work

You can register your address when you are still in a hotel and later when you have your final address you go again and inform them.
But they never asked me anything about bank account in order to rent an apartment. Why exactly they want your bank account?

I had to prove I had a job or money, a bank account, a valid UK passport etc. The organisation I was advising gave me a lot of help. It was very complicated and I think some states are easy to register and some are not. Get advice localy.

I think to be more exact you have to go the Ordnungsamt to register. It's not always at the Rathaus (and I don't think its anything to do with the police).
I (EU citizen) was asked for a passport and proof of where I lived (rent agreement in may case). I took documentis relating to healthcare and finances but was not asked for them.

One bloody important issue is when you do register do NOT state any religion on the form unless you want to gt ripped off for church tax from your salary.

Nope, i'm agnostic but my GF who was an Irish catholic did and then got threatened with hellfire and damnation by her local friendly priest when she went back to the KVR to opt out of church tax.

Wait there a mo, till I go look up the meaning of agnostic. A lovely friendly organisation the Catholic Church is.

What Is an agnostic?
"An agnostic thinks it impossible to know the truth in matters such as God and the future life with which Christianity and other religions are concerned. Or, if not impossible, at least impossible at the present time." Bertrand Russell
Jaysus, that's very deep of you! Fair dues.
Almost set the pot on fire looking up that one...better to cook, it seems multi-tasking is out today.

It is never anything to do with the police. Germany is not a police state.

The name varies - Anmeldungsamt / Auslanderabteilung is one variant. You need to register
your address at the Anmeldungsamt and get a Bescheinigung (an official letter) from
the Auslanderabteilung if you are an "old" EU citizen. This merely states you have UK
(or whatever) citizenship and passport no. so and so. (an Aufenthaltserlaubnis are no longer needed for old EU citizens).
You also need a Sozialversicherungs Number (registration) and to register with the income tax folk -
Finanzamt.
