Health insurance for both US HIPAA and German visa

Finding a single dual-purpose insurance to use

I am a US citizen who was in Germany during 2007-08 with private insurance through Victoria, which was provided by my fellowship. Fellowship is over, and I'll be returning to Germany as a Selbstandig English instructor. While I like to think that I'll love it and stay forever, I also wonder if I'll be crawling back to the US after a year...

So the question is: anyone know of a single insurance policy that fulfills the German visa requirement AND the US HIPAA requirement? Or am I going to need to take out two policies, one in Germany and one in the US, "just in case" I wind up returning to the States (where I am also self-employed), to avoid a gap in US coverage?

Advice much appreciated. Must make a decision soon...

Annaf: the only insurance I know of which would cover one if you switch residence from Germany to US and vice-versa is the Allianz Worldwide Care. But they do not offer to cover US-citizen in the US, I am affraid. Most international health insurances I know of don't cover US-citizen in the US at all. A German health insurance will simply cease to be effective whenever you give up your residence for good...

However, in Germany you can pay for a so-called "Anwartschaft" when you are out of country for a couple of years. LEO translates this as entitlement or vested remainder. This means you pay a small amount per month to the US insurance for the right to return at any time in the future without additional health checks and change of coverage etc. Maybe that'll work for you too in the US? You might want to ask your insurance company or broker about such options...
