You're probably right, the flag should be there on the last day. Still, I'll go with a dragon running the marathon.

I will go with the torch being extinguished and I won't even begin to guess at the animal(s)!

No flag, no torch, no track, but the 12 animals of the Chinese calendar are there all right:
