British Consulate Munich - What's it good for?

Not much, as far as we can tell

Munich British Consulate-General

They have done FUCK ALL for me, FUCK ALL for my interests.

I paid my tax and NI when I worked in Britain, my parents do, I pay over the odds for a passport. Yeah, I get a vote in a pseudo democracy where there isn't that much choice under a legislative scheme that was designed to benefit Conservative Party voters.

I once went in to get a passport and and it was "oh so an exception" that they believed I was a British Citizen and agreed to counter-sign the forms. When I let slip that I REFUSE to carry my passport around with me in Munich they FREAKED! "You MUST do so" they said, despite the fact that the law says different.

Posh people, who own businesses and stuff get invited for drinkies when that Liz Windsor (poshest council house in Britain) has a birthday but they do fuck all for normal British citizens in Munich.

Comment.

(sorry Consulate workers, sure you're personally on here, nothing against you yourselves.)

Grtho, you are so right - what have they ever done for us, eh?

You can't get a flippin passport from them, and they don't issue visas for the UK there either.

What's the point? Posh parties? Well, we're not invited, so they can't be that swish, can they?

Shall we ask for a refund?

My passport expires in March 2005. I was thinking of not bothering to renew it.

Who needs one anyway? Especially when not having one would mean I couldn't get home.

Sounds like a great idea!

The staff at the British Consulate here in Munich have actually been nothing but helpful to me in the past.

They are employees, they don't make the rules.
Topsy
So what have they done for you, then, Sin? Everything I've ever needed (i.e. passport and a visa) I've had to get from Düsseldorf. I don't think people are knocking the staff - well, I'm not - but I just don't really know what they are there for.
Sin
@Topsy

I'm not knocking the British Consulate, but the British Government. The consulate (or rather, one nice lady at the consulate) was very helpful in securing the closest thing to having English nationality for my son (British). He HAS to have it because he is the eldest son of the next generation of a 1,200 year old family (Yes, we pre-date The British). Without that document his (our) claims would be further distanced.

What have The British ever done to me (and my family)? Stole our titles, deeds and land. Used our money to further their own aims. Had us killed in battle for their own greed, and in the process blamed everybody else for the problems of their own making.

A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves.

Now, I am not one who goes on about anti-institution stuff and I do get a bit tired of a cerain TT'ers endless leftish rants. So I decided to have a look at the website and see what services the consulate here in Munich actually offer.

I knew, from experience, that I had to get my passport fom Düsseldorf, which never actually bothered me because I'm totally for centralisation of such services to save on bureaucracy. So I decided to check the website to find out exactly which services they do offer.

A smile started forming on my lips as I saw a list of useful services like info for teachers in Bavaria etc. Then I clicked on one of the links and a PDF file started: and it was exactly as the link promised: info for teachers. I then try another service offered; result? Another PDF.

So, all the services that Munich is responsible for are covered by PDF files. Toll! I think. If that is the extent of their service, why do we actually need an office?

Then I realised to my shock and horror that I was agreeing with Grtho! Will the world come to an end, I asked myself. Well I looked out the window and all seemed fine, so apparently I can share an opinion with our lovable lefty without the heavens falling upon us!

Everyone's allowed a good old lefty rant now and again!

@OG, I clicked on some of their "advice" for Munich a few months ago and it still had prices in DM!

My experience of the Consulate staff in Munich and Düsseldorf is that they are usually: rude, unhelpful, lazy and generally ill informed.

If you have ever had to go about arranging a visa for someone its a nightmare, the whole process is designed to be awkward, demeaning and designed get as much cash out of anyone going through it as possible. You can do it by post in theory but would you trust that shower with your passport??
Katrina
And the consulate parties are shit as well so you are not missing anything. Crap sarnies and wine that belongs on chips.

Anyway D'dorf did my passport very quickly and efficiently but since the British Council closed, it has all gone downhill. I guess they are useful if you are in jail, but seeing as I don't intend on going to jail, they aren't much use to me.

What are these consulate parties Katrina?

And where is the British consulate anyway?

The parties are invite-only (usually via work contacts), stand-around things, sometimes involving dull bits of "art". The British Council ones are better but they have closed the Munich office.

Agree entirely with grtho. I have wondered a few times what the actual point of the consulate here is.

British Consulate Munich to close

It's not clear if the consulate will actually be closing, or whether it's one of the ones which will be "replaced with local staff".

I just called the consulate and guess what, they didn't know! Typical. They were, however, vaguely aware of the news.

Received by e-mail from the British Embassy in Berlin...

In brief: no, the Munich consulate will not close but will be maintained exclusively by staff recruited in Germany.

Statement by British Ambassador on changes to the German Network

As the Foreign Secretary announced to Parliament on 15 December, the UK will be closing its consulates in Stuttgart and Frankfurt, and our Trade Office in Leipzig. Our Consulates in Hamburg and Munich will remain but will be staffed exclusively by staff recruited in Germany.    We expect all changes to be completed by the end of 2006.  There will be no change to our Consulate-General in Düsseldorf.

We have informed the Minister-Presidents in the Laender concerned and are in close touch with them about our future co-operation. The Foreign Secretary has also informed the German Foreign Minister.

These changes are part of a world wide review of which will help the British Government's worldwide network concentrate on strategic priorities for the 21st century, such as terrorism, proliferation of WMD and climate change. They reflect a 21st century diplomacy which is becoming less dependent on fixed buildings in an age of internet and cheap air travel.    As close partners in the European Union, our two nations have more direct contacts than ever before.

Our streamlined network in Germany will continue to offer the same standards of service to both German and UK citizens in the areas of trade, investment, consular support, passports, visas and provision of general information about Britain.

Some of these changes will be difficult. We are particularly aware of the implications for our staff who continue to give excellent service across Germany. We are supporting them as best we can.

Germany remains one of the UK's most important partners in Europe and, with France, has the highest number of British diplomats in post.    I and my colleagues are pemanently travelling in Germany to make contacts across the different Laender. We shall be doing even more of this in future.
