Hi - I'm having a difficult time getting my student visa. I live in Berlin, but study in Hamburg. I was told that I need to anmeld in Hamburg and get my visa there - that I can't do it in Berlin. Does anyone know if this is actually true? I've been trying to get this done for two weeks, and my current visa runs out at the end of this month. I don't really have time to move to Hamburg in the next few days.... anyone have any information about this?

You need to get your residence permit wherever you are living. Are you really commuting from Berlin to Hamburg for your studies?

the only truth i know is that the very place you are residing at the moment is where you can "almeld".i dont know if the law had a twist since you are studying in another city.or technically if your almeldung was changed to your place of studies.if that is not the case, then you only have to go to your rathause and almend, and perharps to the foreign office(dont know if this is applicable to students) and you have your visa.
if they stil insist you must do it in hamburg, dont panic, this is germany!they will provide you with alternative white paper that will protect you
incase you meet those jobless boys you meet every corner of the straße.

highered - your post was really not helpful. Yes - I do live in Berlin and study in Hamburg. I'm doing an Aufbaustudium in Musik. I do most of my work (practicing) at home. Basically, I need to be in Hamburg once a week - at most.

If you aren't living in Hamburg, you can't register as living there.
Go back to the Berlin authorities--did you explain that you will continue living in Berlin?
What type of residence permit are you currently on?
