This is my first year in Germany and have no idea how well the germans or the English speaking community celebrate the new year. Was wondering if there are any good events in Munich and also how long people celebrate for.

Do they do New Year properly or is it only on the 31st?

Reichenbachbrücke (U Bahn Fraunhoferstrasse) always has a spontaneous street party and fireworks. BYO booze. They'll as likely as not be a crowd of English speakers there. We'll be the loud drunk ones singing and snogging lamposts and stuff! laugh.gif

if you can read 'deutsch' this gives you a little idea of what's happening in Munich on NYE: ganz-muenchen.de - sylvester termine

having spent 7 NYEs in Munich, i would recommend that you're best having an idea where you want to go and sorting it out in advance. otherwise, you may well be left out in the cold, freezing your ... off blink.gif

The latter i would imagine mate biggrin.gif

Just wasn't sure if Munich was like Edinburgh, where you had to get a ticket to even get in to most bars rolleyes.gif

Many Thanks to all who replied, i will keep my eyes peeled.

C+2B is dead right, you want to have a rough game plan in advance.

In that case forget Tollwood, as the market bit closes on Christmas Eve and there's only a ticket-only party at New Year.

Well its not "proper" like in Scotland where it can go on for a few weeks.
It all depends on how the calendar falls really, 1 January is a public holiday, as is 6 January.

A lot of people would often take off most of the first week of January.
It's not as big as NYE but you could keep partying. But a lot of people use that week to get out of Munich to go skiing.
Anyway, this year 6 January is a Saturday so a lot of people will be back to work on January 2nd.

Dunno if you are with mates or what you're into.

You could look around now for pubs or clubs that sound your cup of tea.
What I'd do is first off when I get to Munich stock up on drinkies / fireworks at a local supermarket.

Go early on NYE, possibly even lunchtime, for dinner.
Then do a few bars, roughly in central munich /Schwabing.
Then around 11 ish head up to the Olympia Hill or one of the bridges for fireworks and drinkies on the street.
Then around 1 ish head to a bar or club you have a fair guess will be your scene and you can get in without paying a fortune.

Maybe run into a few from here when out (don't know how i would know right enough, but i can worry about that later).
