I am moving to Munich from the UK

Will I have fun? How will I adjust?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Newcomers

Hi,

I've just been offered a great job by a blue-chip company in Munich but am wondering about leaving family and friends in the UK. My german skills are not that hot (although I'd like to learn) and think it would take me a while to adjust. I'm mid-twenties, will I have fun here? Also, I'd rather share an apartment than live on my own. Do expats share apartments in Munich?

Thanks a lot for any advice
Keydeck
Yes & yes.
Jules Winnfield
I don't mean to be harsh, but how can you ask questions like that? Unless you're on some trek after having been hit by a Coke bottle and don't even know what a light bulb is, you should start by doing a search. People share places, and yes, they occasionally have "fun" too!!?

Keydeck
This comment from a mate sums it up pretty well...

This must be the dumbest post for ages. Great job from a blue chip company, just hope they didn't give you anything where you need to show initiative. Get on plane. Visit future place of work. How the fuck did young people get to be such unadventerous unenterprising lazy cunts. Fuck me they wouldn't have survived here 15 years ago.

In more specific terms, the questions are fucking stupid and in terms of the first one, unanswerable. Will you have fun? How in the name of Angela's left tit is anyone supposed to know if you will have fun without knowing a single thing about you other than the fact that you are in your twenties and not very bright?

Looks like another Toytown welcome breaking out.

Welcome, Tob0. Search around a little and you will find lots of info.

When are you coming?

Play nice...
Going anywhere away from your home is always going to be a bit hard, but I'd say go for it! Yeah, Munich is a good place to be. There's quite an old population in Germany, but Munich still has lots of young people, there's always lots of street festivals etc on, this summer in particular methinks. The quality of life here is supposed to be one of the highest in Germany (maybe the world, I'm not sure). It really is a beautiful city - clean, nice architecture, excellent beer, really efficent public transport system etc. If you look at the meet-ups section of this site you can have a look at the"meet-ups for 20-
somethings, which are a great way of meeting people who are in the same boat as you. If you want to learn German, there's no better way of doing it than being in the country where the language is spoken. Worst case scenario, you decide its not for you, you can move home again and you have some impressive international work-experience on you CV.
Good luck!

Tob0, you aren't the first and won't be the last to ask these questions. I found that liberal use of the Search function (top right) can ease your tension and give you information on just about everything you want to know and other things that you may not be quite prepared for yet (such as the nudes in the English Garden 10 minutes away from Marienplatz).

Take the plunge, you'll never go back.
BattalionBoy
I would recommend Zurich tobO - there must be similar IT opportunities for you there. The tax situation is better, the people are better looking and much more friendlier. They also make German sound like a fun language to learn and you can always easily visit Munich from there whenever you want.
tob0
Thanks guys. I deserved that. You're right I should have done more research and am a naive moron. Only thing I'll say in my defence is that the job offer came quickly and I have to answer v. soon, never having considered Munich before. You guys live there - so obviously have a very different perspective. And I don't do IT by the way, whoever that was, plus I know Zurich well, but I'm not picking a central european city here.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna do it. coming in November! (might have to change my name though to avoid getting a beating.)
Johnny English
Good recovery fellah - I am confident you will fit in fine 'cos you passed the first test. You fucked up a wee bit and took it on the chin. Can't ask more than that.

It's the only the ones that respond all mega chopsy that we burn at the stake.

You will find massive majority of ex-brits over here are of the opinion that, sure, we could live somewhere else - just not the UK again!!! And it don't sound like it's exactly
getting better just at the minute back in blighty.
Exile
Reading between the lines you may be after reassurance more than advice.

Worst case:
You are a two hour flight away from the UK, your in your mid-twenties, you can easily afford a few career wrong turns, it is possible to get by with very little German.

Chances are you will have a lot of fun and may end staying much longer than you planned.

Good for you. I doubt that you'll regret it.

I wish I'd had a chance to live in Munich in my Mid 20's. You'll lack for nothing.

Moved here 8+ years ago, never looked back.

Disappointing.

Tob0, didn't you read the forum usage guidelines?

After receiving a beating you're supposed tell us that our comments "make you sick with rage" and that we're "immature, insular people who've spent too long in dark, clammy Irish pubs". You're then supposed to announce that you're leaving the building and that we all know why. We would then throw stones at your coffin.

Poor effort, really.

Good luck with the move though.

If you were looking for a range of opinions, you ain't gonna get them here. Most people who live here actually like the place, duh,, so you#re only get gonna get the usual "munich is great because the public transport is good, you can go cycling, and it is near the mountains" opinions.
If your criteria for a great place to live is based upon how punctual trains are, whether or not you can cycle about, and proximity to a big pile of rocks, then fine, but frankly, that seems like madness to me.

So, let me fill you in from a different angle. First up, the lingo. It is rubbish. Sounds appaling, is nowhere near as easy to learn as spanish or french or italian, and you might come over with an attitude of wanting to learn, but I've seen countless people have the same attitude, and then give up because it is a pain in the arse and no fun.
Second point, women. Lots of quality on that front, but then again, there are quality birds in alot of places.
Food. If you lie convenience and cannot cook, forget about Munich, unless you are really, really, really, into pork.
Beer. Germany, and Bavaria in particular win hands down in the beer world for me, but then again, most bars in Cork sell weissbier these days, so again, not a particularly unique argument for moving to Munich.

In short, there are loads of better places to live I reckon, but perhaps it is because I don't give two shits about cycles and mountains. Quality of life? Define a decent quality of life. If its drugs, hookers and parties, go somewhere else.
Buffy
You'll have a fab time here.

As others said, I am well impressed that you said you deserved all that ribbing you got at the beginning. Most people get all nasty and defensive and then they really get abused.

You've just proved that you'll fit right in with the ex-pats here on TT!
Bumpy
Munich has an excellent infrastructure.

So don't worry...
tob0
Thanks again for the advice folks. It's exactly right that I was just looking for a bit of reassurance - I'm used to having lot's of people around in London.

But the job's worth moving for, Munich seems like a nice place and as long as there are people to go drinking with I'll be fine.

Will be in touch again soon I'm sure, and if you hear of anyone looking for a flatmate in the autumn...

Sorted.

Right, now where do you stand on racism, sexual discrimination, conspiracy theories, pikeys and midget porn? We may as well vet you properly while we're at it.

Tobo. did you notice how delighted they became here when you became submissive and subservient - it is a Nazi thing. You will look good in Munich wearing your Pinocchio hat.
YorkshireLad6
You might want to be more specific about the "blue chip" company you will be working for. As you will spend many of your waking hours there, then the environment they offer you is equally important to your move, and others may be able to share their experiences.
MonksTown
I work for a "blue chip" company but still was out tonight drinking €1 pints with mates who will shag behind the skip for a cider and a bag of chips.
I only demand a cider. Get over yourself love and get out and enjoy Munich. cool.gif

€1 pints

you got me with this bit. Where is this place exactly ?
MonksTown
Well half litres as opposed to pints mate.

Out the station, past the junkies, turn right at the kebab shop, look out for the traffic wardens and it's on the right before you reach the "gentlemens' bar" POP-ASS.

And this from the man who believes Austria belonged to Germany or vice versa or something equally ridiculous. But I have to say he has made an extremely educated observation on this one.

That is why I love this forum so much.

Slap the newbies down = Nazi forum bastards.

Be friendly to newbies = Nazi forum bastards.

Me? I am just off to invade Poland in my new $50,000 Corvette Z3 purchased on this very website. I might be a Nazi but I know a bargain when I see one.

And Marmite?

Don't forget goat sex..

At this point you're supposed to have a huge rant because you didn't know how to edit your first post.

Oh , and how do you stand on nude darts?
Rilana
I think you've all scared him off now. He probably thinks he needs to eat a tub of marmite whilst having sex with a goat followed by a game of darts after which he needs to discuss current politics (well researched and with lots of hard facts at the ready to back up his opinions).
HellesAngel
Well researched? Hard facts? A couple of links to Wikipedia and some terrorist conspiracy theorist sites is enough proof for TT rolleyes.gif

With your German boyfriends female cousin family members.

The correct answer of course being "Well behind the oche".
