Hi Everyone -
This is a topic that has been covered in many different ways, but I havent seen anything with this particular circumstance. I had a wireless connection through my 701V Speedport on an old laptop. That laptop crashed and now I have a new one with a built in wireless card. The laptop is pretty much fresh out of the box with Windows Vista installed and all I have done is click on the wireless button on the front of the computer.
When I click on the Wireless Networks, I see my router in the networks list (along with a few outside networks) and when I click on it, it asks for a password. I've tried every password that I know and none of them work here.
I've also tried installing the software, which has been a useless procedure. I tried to use the version 6.0 installation process (for Vista) and did not have much luck with it. I've since deleted any software that has been installed
What would you kind folks recommend for my next efforts to get this thing connected? Nothing has changed with my router, just a new laptop. I've read about things called "MAC" and "WPA" and "DHCP" on this forum and I realize that they might affect my ability to connect, but I have no idea what these things are and how to get them set properly. I'd really appreciate any help with step by step instructions on what to do next.
I have all of the account information that was used to setup the connection last time.
Thanks Very Much!

Hi
You are after the 'key' that the Router stores to allow wireless connectivity. If you don't know what this key is, you'll have to connect to the router with a network cable and look at the settings for the router to retrieve the key. You'll then be able to disconnect the network cable, connect via wireless and type that key in.
To do this, connect the laptop to the router with a network cable, open internet explorer and go to the address "http://192.168.1.1". If this doesn't work, try "http://192.168.0.1" or "http://10.0.0.1".
If you manage to get to the routers home page you should be able to log into the router, find the "wireless" section and find the security key. Write it down, disconnect the network cable, then try to connect via wireless with that key.
Hope this helps, I don't have my router with me here at work, so trying to remember how I did it!
Cheers

Some routers also print the key on the bottom of the router, so assuming you didn't change anything try that.

Yes, my idiot flag is up right about now. I was looking for the Router key that is RIGHT ON THE ROUTER. Needless to say, my wife is the technically savvy one in this family. Unfortunately, she is in Paris and is very unhappy without Internet Access.
Thanks for everyone's help. I am up and running.

(Your original post has been moved here so the answers you are seeing are to another question)
In default state the W701V has it-s own built-in modem, so you don't connect it to a modem, but directly to the splitter. Alternatively you can switch off the internal modem (switch at the back) and connect it as you have now. Either way, it will still need configuring with your ISP details.
