Hi,

I have received a single entry Type D visa. I will be applying for a permit once in Germany. My question is, will a permit allow me to re enter the country (e.g. visit my home country and back)?

A "Type D visa" is a national visa for a stay exceeding 90 days. It is only valid in Germany, but can also be used for transit through one or more Schengen countries on your way to and from Germany ... but in your case only for a single entry into Germany

Once he receives his permit (which I assme will be a residence permit like "Aufenthalterlaubnis"), he can travel to his home country and to schengen states without restriction.
