Hi,
I am to moving to Germany and planning to take my UK registered LHD BMW 3 series with me (why I have a LHD in UK is a story for another day). I was wondering if some can provide some info on the following:
1. How long can I drive it is Germany with UK registration (and MOT and roadtax)
2. What is the process for getting the german registration?
3. Are there any english language links I can take a look at?

Thanks,

If your "long story" includes it being grey market German OEM spec in the first place, then you're golden.

More details needed.

well its not difficult
you can drive in germany for six month.
if you british car registration is v5c then you only drive here.

steps
  1. Tuv (You can not do TUV in any shop. Special TUV is accepted for the registration of foreign cars
  2. Registration 150 euro
  3. Number plate 50 euro

its only 4 days process.

If you have only V5 British car registration certificate then you need permission from dvla.

You can legally keep the car on UK plates in Germany for a year (the 12 months restart if the car leaves the country for more than a certain period of time, I think 3 weeks), so long as it is still legal to drive in the UK (i.e. insured, MOT-ed, taxed and registered to a valid UK address). The usual problem is the insurance since most UK insurers will only cover for up to 90 continuous days abroad (if that). Otherwise you could probably keep it semi-legally indefinitely if you get it MOT-ed when back in the UK and pay the tax online or through a friend/relative (probably at the address to which the vehicle is registered). If you can get the insurance then it's unlikely that anyone would ever check how long the car has been here for.

As for the German registration, the process will be the same as for a RHD car - searching on this forum will give you your answers (e.g. in this thread, which unsurprisingly is also in English...)

I can back up maekelborger. I had a UK registered car in Germany for years. No problem.
You just need to take it back to the UK once a year for the MOT / the start of another year in D.
German traffic law is more generous than the EU rule - you are allowed up to one year (but you can repeat this indefinitely)
and you must keep your tax disc up to date.
(I checked this in the StVo - the relevant law book).
If your MOT has run out while you are in Germany then it is wise to get your vehicle Motted close to one of the channel ports
on your return.
Obvously you must be insured (Stuart Collins in Swansea worked for me).
Also it is absolutely essential to have your vehicle in 100% order as regards safety related items.

I have a v5c registration for my car. So all I need to show up in Germany with is the registration? Do I need permission from DVLA?

The "long" story is that brought my car over from the US where I worked. Made sense due to the low dollar rate.

Thanks,

No you dont need. After getting germany. you should declare your car off road to solve your road tax problem in uk. just bring car into germany. Nobody will check you. Do TUV and apply for registration. you need to give V5c to german registration office. you can also declare online.
Total cost to register your car is App 400Euro.
