Here's my tip Tom Robinson's web-site. You can download some of his studio albums and live stuff. Start with - Living in a Boom Time a great live album.

Here's a link for some free downloads of up-and-coming artists. It's also cool because you can listen to and rate music to give new artists a shot at being "discovered".

Sorry guys all the above links appear to be dead.
Here's a tutorial on how to find free music on the web.

Here is a site I use

Not a download but just listening to Alannah Myles's last album streaming off her website. Cunningly named after the only hit she had outside of Canada(?)

Just spotted on her website she's coming touring and playing near Rosenheim in October. Might be interesting.

How about limewire (limewire.com) for individual songs or thepiratebay or mininova.org for albums. Or where you asking for legal ones?

I've found last.fm to be decent for streaming but you have to pay for most of the downloads.

Downloading MP3s isn't really a good idea in Germany, there's a bloodsucking lawyer up in Hamburg who entraps users and is issuing tens of thousands of copyright infringement claims every year. TV shows and films are OK though.

HYPEMACHINE

if you use a peer or torrent site, you cant listen to what you are interested in beforehand. On hypemachine you can. and fast forward it. and then download, for free, a 320kbp mp3 of the track from a music blog who operate in a far better legal grey area than the torrent sites.
It also links with lastfm so you can download tracks that you hear on lastfm.

Its really nice to use. you dont have to download any software. it is the best free music interface you could want. and you will discover loads of amazing new music whilst using it, which makes it fackin awesome in its own right.

Unlike most of the sites on here free and legal.

trueanthem.com

Hi

Try out this great website http://www.last.fm Its not a free download site, but it allows you to add any music / artist into your library for free and you can then play your library like a radio. Great way to check out music before you buy or whatever...
R&K
and because the library is online, you can play your library anywhere you have access to the internet

For superlative experimental music, check out this label Type Records. Loads of freebies, but please buy stuff if you like any of the artists.

For mixes of electronica, techno, house, drum & bass, garage etc, check out this site MPIII.com

radiotracker audials one can legally download mp3 format from any streaming radio sources. You can define the quality you want (up to 320 kbps). If you settle for a lower limit, say 96 kbps, it can simultaneously record ten or more stations (depending on your DSL availability).
Owain Glyndwr
recording off the radio is illegal and contravenes the same law as file sharing.

Remember breaking the law is not cool, kids.
