To all those who speak German, a mail from my friend bernie who runs a wine seminar business:

Bernhard

To all those who don't speak German, my friend Bernie is having a wine and chocolate seminar next tuesday and is offering the remaining places to me for € 20 instead of €45.

You get to test 10 different wines with 10 chcolate types, plus other snacks available. It's in the Orange room, just behind the Cinema (Steiglmair Platz).

PM or post if interested.

Winegirl
Is a reply from me really required? Is there any doubt that I would want come?

Count me in!
JoolyBooly
just to warn.. it will be in German, but then we can translate, and you'll be too busy drinking to listen anyway biggrin.gif

I guess this is a bad idea for a singles' night though... although all those women should attract enterprising guys!!!
MadAxeMurderer
Hmmm if I say I would die for a wine and chocolate evening does that make me a wimp???

Unforunately I should be in San Diego then, but if I'm not I'm definetly in.
canuck
I'd love to come along...
JoolyBooly
well that went without saying, didn't it?! tongue.gif

MaM let me know by PM if you end up wanting to come, am checking jus how many tix are available!...
JoolyBooly

please let me know ASAP if you can't make it, then we can let other people come. It's important to fill these spaces a it's a fixed-cost event for Bernie..
Gen
will people be smoking there or not? If not, I'll take a place. If they will, I won't.
JoolyBooly
smoking at a wine tasting is a very, very silly idea, it kills the taste buds. The people i know on this list are all non-smokers and the room is also non-smoking. People go outside to smoke.

So I guess 8 tickets are gone (includes Ben Panter and Gen) so there's one ticket left if someone wants to come.
biogeek
I do biggrin.gif Can you add me in or is the last spot taken?

cheers!
JoolyBooly
OK, so overnight Bernie sold 2 more tickets. That means the following people are confirmed as having spaces (and wanting them) from Toytown:

WineGirl
Showem
Arwen
Canuck
Metro75
Funky skunk
Benpanter

The waiting list:
Gen
Biogeek

So if someone can't make it, please let me, Gen and Biogeek know by PM.

Gen and Biogeek, if you don't get a place, there is another one on the 1st February and Bernie is offering us 3 spaces at the specal rate for that event too. So we 3 could go then, as I can't make it this Tuesday after all (have physio).

Ho ho ho, I know that, you know that, but Germans in general don't seem to know that. See how few restaurants have non-smoking zones.

Glad to wait, looking forward to it if I can come! wink.gif
JoolyBooly
you shall go to the ball, Cinderella! Showem can't go. wink.gif
Gen
hurrah!
Winegirl
@JB: Are the tickets reserved under your name?
JoolyBooly
sort of, just turn up and say "i'm a friend of Jooly, your alcoholic english friend".. and watch his grin go up to his ears like this biggrin.gif

looking for a photo of Bernie, he's a cutey with a really expressive face... have fun!
JoolyBooly
hey ho, there is one space left after all.

Biogeek and Gen both have spaces, Metro75, FunkySkunk and Showem can't make it.

Anyone else want to come or drop out? Let me know...
JoolyBooly
Hey, a couple of people are sick, so there is one ticket left for tonight.

There are 7 TTers going, the event is in German (but people can help translate). It is a relaxed place with a tasting of 10 different wines and matching chocolates, plus water and snacks.

Please PM me or post here if you'd like to go.

JB
JoolyBooly
would anyone like to come tonight? I only just got a message that Biogeek can't come dry.gif

like I said, it's a fixed cost event so Bernie is now going to lose money as I didn't get warning in advance...
JoolyBooly
If anyone wants to come, just turn up at the Orange Room at 19:30. I will go and see if we have enough people, then I'll go to physio if someone turns up to take Biogeek's place.

elderflowers... you'll recognize them next time you see them! Characteristic is that the bunch of flowers is flat on top.

Had a great time, and I'm going to mail the guy all the critique points I heard -- as a teacher myself, I'm always eager to learn how to improve, and satisfying the customer is my business. Hope it's his too, I want to take my husband in February, but only if he switches to doing the tannined red wines before the sweet whites...

elderberries with the same shape. Google image search is the greatest!
Elderflower (Holunderblüten) syrup is marvelous stuff with carbonated water. Or a bit in a dry champagne, mmm.
benpanter
Yeup... lovely evening. Many thanks to JB for organising it
canuck
Good stuff JB. Thanks. Too bad I ate all their chocolate..It's really just too bad... smile.gif
JoolyBooly
smile.gif Hmmm, who dragged me screaming and kicking to GM'S?! I got to work at 10:15 today ...

not so sure about red wine before white, guess it's your taste... normally that's a complete no-no in wine tastings as the tannins take over your taste buds so you can't taste white wine any more.

Bernie is certainly learning as he goes, he normally sends around a questionnaire asking what he could improve. So feel free to tell him, although I already told him he needs to speed up the start and slow down the tasting (he could have told us the history of chocolate whilst we were supping ) rolleyes.gif ...

he was probably afraid the TT crowd would drink the cellar dry if they were given more time!!!
Arwen
really great evening!! thaks jb!!
never had wine with chocolate - now i know that it can go well if you have the right wine and chocolate - soooo gooood!!
Winegirl
As a clarification to wine ordering...

Dry wines (Pinot Grigio) are always first after that comes whites of low sweetness (german "dry" wines). Then comes light reds (for instance pinot noir), after that comes your med bodied reds (merlot, cab. sauv.), than big reds (Zins, syrah), after that comes sweet wines (red or white).

I think the last 2-3 whites were sweet enough to qualify into the last group. The problem with putting anythig sweet before a tannic red is that the sugar coats your mouth. Then when you try the red any slight sweetness (.2% or less sugar) or fruit flavors are masked and the tannins are overwhelming.
