The escalators were not working when we were there.
... just wondering if they might have been - the German escalators are designed to save electricity by not working when nobody is on them, so unless you go towards one with the intention of going up on it, it would appear that it isn“t working...(just a thought!)

Then move the machine out of the platform and in the central area. If they can't put a booth on the platform (and no other S Bahn platforms that we saw have a machine or a booth anyway) then put the machine near the booth upstairs.
There are many machines above ground and they are located in both terminals. The highest concentration of machines are actually...wait for it...around the ticket counter/booth.

Actually there are 6 Tickets machines on the platform, and last time I counted 1 that's in English with English Signs/Documents on it.
Each Terminal has 2-4 machines either just before the exit or in the central area.

We spent an hour in the whole ordeal. After 8 hours on a plane and 3 hours before perhaps, I am not sure anyone can have more patience.
This is what happens in Canada when you've just come off a long flight and you don't speak the language:

That incident was terrible, it is an isolated incident.

That's right. Try going through costumes at Vancouver airport! Wait at least 1 hour (low season) and then answer the three questions they ask one hundred times each just using different words.

Respectfully, each country has the right to ask as many questions as many times before they let anyone in. Although not a pleasant experience, it is ANYDAY preferable to loosing valuables within 1 hour in an unfamiliar city with language barrier. Yes, this does go on in the charming city everyone living there thinks it is, just ask the visitors, they're the victims. Thankfully there also are people who are not under any false notions of their city and thankfully know when to apologize rather than blame the victim.

You just can't let it go can you. You left your bag unattended, despite constant warnings never to do this, in a crowded international airport and some low life stole it. This sort of thing happens all over the world, you were naive and have hopefully learned a lesson.

Friendly reception
Not in Canada when you come from outside the country and not any better in the US or Germany or Britain. The best reception I got was in Oaxaca,Mexico. You pick the line if you have nothing to declare, have your passport stamped and are done to go. Took less than 10 minutes. But there was not a large crowd either.

Which costumes go down best with the officials? Mickey Mouse? Princess? Witch? Presumably not pirate...

Man the only problem so far I have had with the
Munich airport is passport control asking me why I would want to stay in Regensburg.

Munich airport is great compared to most other airports. As has been mentioned, it's not crowded and things are clean and efficient. I travel fairly often and have never had to wait more than a few minutes for my bags at either terminal.
THe worst airports I've experienced are :JFK (read Third world airport), and Amsterdam (aka shithole). Dirty, inefficient, incompetent employees, endless passport lines and security checks making it next to impossible to reach connecting flights that are about 5 km walk away. The most disgusting toilets with no baby-changing tables save one in the whole airport. Once safely through security, no child facilities at all.
