"Maps" link at top of the forum has disappeared

It's now been replaced by "Friendly links" instead

What happened to the 'maps' button at the top?
Darkknight
Looks like EB's Play'n around again..
Editor Bob
It was redundant.

If you need to know where, say, Berlin is, you can probably simply type "Berlin" into your Google toolbar.

Space in the link menu at the top of forum is tight. So the redundant link got axed.

It it's place comes the "Friendly links" page.

If you have your own website, blog, or homepage, you can get it linked from that "friendlies" page. See the page itself for details.

The maps page is still retrievable via: TT search - maps

It was redundant.

I've always thought redundant meant something was not used or needed anymore. I used the maps link a heck of a lot whereas the new link justs goes to a load of people waffling on about their tedious existance, a bit like those horrid Christmas letters people send out. The fact that we can still get to the maps by using the search function suggest that it's not redundant at all. Still it's your site I suppose you can spoil it as much as you like! wink.gif

You're thinking of the UK 'being made redundant', i.e. being laid off. Redundant in this and most other contexts means that it's an unnecessary duplication of a function, not that it was simply unnecessary. In this case, the Maps link was unnecessary because as EB explained, there is another quick and easy way to access the Map function, so the link was removed.

But far be it from me to speak for Editor Bob.

But not as quick as it was and for a newbie not obvious at all, look how many people fail to use the search function for answering their questions.

the friendly links are simply a method of getting the site further up in search engine results (such as google) as one of the ranking criteria is the number of sites that link to your site.

Unfortunately stupidity is a tough one to mitigate against though.

Are you by any chance suggesting that their may be financial motives for this move?
Hutcho
Your site isn't moved up the rankings by linking to others, it is moved up by others linking to you. So the only ones EB would be helping with this page is others.
Owain Glyndwr
yes, but EB makes it a pre-requisite that you link to TT before you are allowed to link from TT to your site. clever, ey?
