Up until now I have been using SmartFTP which I like and never had a problem with, but it is now telling me that the free version is no longer available and I have to buy it.
That's OK, I like this software and would be willing to buy it. But before I do, can anyone on here recommend a good, easy to use alternative which is available free of charge?
I want it not for local PC to local PC, but for uploading website stuff to the internet.
Thanks in advance,
MT

Windows Commander. Wouldn't have a PC without it.

Total Commander (previously called Windows Commander) is the one essential PC tool I would not do without. Better than Windows Explorer, has two panes for easy local/remote file copying, batch renaming, all keyboard shortcuts you would ever need, plus an FTP client. You can also store links in the icon bar to your fav PC apps. The true strength of TC is that navigating your PC is really quick and easy (via keyboard shortcuts) and hence using the FTP client is seemless and easy.
Plus, you have multiple tabs in each pane, which makes loading files to different common places on your server very easy (you can save the tabs for reuse for each new session).

I second kanda's recommendation: I like CoreFTP a lot.

Thanks,
I have looked around and just seen CoreFTP, I'll look at it further.
I also saw something called FileZilla.
Does anyone have any experience of this and is it any good?

I use AceFTP which is free as long as you don't use it commercially.

FlashFXP is the only FTP client I'd even consider putting on a PC of a friend's computer or any of my own...however, it's not free...so Total commander might be the best you can get.

I was in the same shoes, using smartftp, then switched to the one in firefox browser, and find it even easier to use than smart ftp.

me?
I used flashfxp on windows before, and it was a good little FTP program, with lots of support for other protocols (although my main reason for buying it was for its Xbox FTP support)
For the Mac I use Cyberduck
I like
LeechFTP, simple and fast, although I would agree with the comments that due to no longer being supported it's not been kept up-to-date, but it's enough for my needs and I'm used to it.

Thanks again for your help.
I visited this
SnapFiles site and found quite a few choices including CoreFTP & FileZilla.
In the end I chose to try FileZilla because the site rating was higher and so was the popularity.
I have downloaded it and for the basic things I want to do, it is perfect and a little easier to use than SmartFTP, which I almost bought.
Setting the connection details worked first time, which I can't say of my initial experiences with SmartFTP. With that one it took some time to come to terms with a peculiar setting.
Anyway, for the moment it's working well, easy to use and I once again have an FTP programme.
Thanks,
MT

http://winscp.net/ is highly rated and used at some of the client sites I have worked at due to it supporting SSH.

If you use Firefox you can always add
FileZillaDespite the name, FileZilla is a stand alone program that does not need a browser, there is a Firefox add-on called FireFTP.
