I like sport but don't follow cycling and happpened to see his mountain win on TV (on Sunday I think).

I was a group who watched as he left the rest of the field absolutely for dead - not just a narrow win collapsing over the line in heap from exhaustion.

No prizes for guessing what we all said then given his margin of victory....and so it's come to pass a few days later.

Yet I see the President of World Cycling is reported as being "shocked". He must be the only one.

Tour de Apotheke! no thank you.

I've never been a fan of cycling anyway, but am amazed that the news programmes still report this as 'news'. Surely these days it would be news if the eventual winner wasn't using illegal performance-enhancing substances.

By no means do I approve doping.
But the doping is caused by greedy tour organizers, who add way to many mountain passes to collect fees for the tour to pass through a certain town.

Check the schedules, and imagine that any human has to ride across 6 or more mountain passes for more several days in a row. There is no human body able to recuperate overnight.
It is certainly silly, sometimes even dangerous to use performance enhancing substances. But the tour organizers should be blamed.

The careers of the riders who get caught are over. They loose their livelihood. That's punishment enough.

Why not just make it open to drugs like body building?

Then at least they'd all start level.

Excellent question. Here is the difference:

  • Body builder's nuts just shrink if they use too many drugs = impotence.
  • In endurance sports athletes get killed.

I think you'll find that body builders die early as a result of doping too.

But it's their choice.
