Do you plan to settle in Munich?

Here for a break or... something more?

As a kind of an offshoot from a question I asked elsewhere, just wondering how many TTers are planning to, or could imagine settling in Munich (für's Leben!)? How many of you are here as a (pleasant) interlude, with the definite intention of eventually moving on? (Make the - big - assumption that continuity of work would not be a problem...)
Owain Glyndwr
i have settled here (for now) and even if i leave for a few years to go and work in a plant abroad, i will always come back. I have lived here since 2000 (except for my 12 months of commuting to our new factory in England) and it is the longest i have lived anywhere since leaving Wales at the age of 5.
DrivinWest
I've decided that weather is overrated. Give me sunny days all the time (trust me, it doesn't get boring). I'd like to give Austin, Texas or maybe Southern California a try. Realistically, however, I think I'll end up in New York.
boomtown_rat
I could really imagine staying here for good but the reason for us being down here is the wife's research and that ends in 2006 so we'll probably be off back to Scandinavia then.
interplanetjanet
More likely than not, I'll be leaving at the end of next year.

@DW - Try northern California, it's much more laid back. Only place in So Cal I'd live would probably be San Diego.
DrivinWest
@ IPJ

I have heard the same about SD and NoCal. I kinda have a hankerin' for working at the JPL in Pasadena though.
Showem
How long is an interlude? I don't see myself here "for life", but I've been here 11 years now.

Anything short of life smile.gif 11 years would qualify!
Topsy
I'm here for life, all being well.
I think Showem should be, too smile.gif

DW: I have a few friends at JPL, and they all love it. Pasadena's a good part of L.A. too - mountain biking, education (CalTech), city life all around. Terrible smog in the summer though, but that's why God made Malibu.

I plan to stay for a few years, not retire here.

I can understand that kinda hankerin'. I doubt if I'd pass up an offer from there either.
smegol
when my studies are finished i'll probably hang around a bit and do some more exhibitions (instilation art and sculpure) but then i'm off. not sure where to go after that . I've been here 6 years and it will hard to leave. but thats life,

boomtown_rat
if you get a position at JPL maybe you can pull some strings and get us some SRTM data that is currently 'off limits'
Sin
Been here 5 years now, married a Bavarian girl, set up my business here, have kids in school here...

...yeah, I might just stay.
smegol
ya, my girlfriend will just have to come too!

It'll be 2 years in January for me and it still feels like I just got here yesterday. I certainly dont want to return to the UK now, but I wouldnt rule out moving to somewhere else to work. The US would be my 1st choice.
Anti-Matters
Definatel will not go back to UK, so probably stay here for a long time...
Foxy
I have been here for a year and a half and am leaving to move back to the UK next week. I have had a brilliant time here, I've made many fantastic friends and thoroughly enjoyed all that Bavaria has to offer but I feel its definitely time to move on to something new for a wee while. I'm going to try my hand at living in the deep dark sarf of England innit and start speaking like a geeza...
kitkat64
Well, I just bought a house so I think I'm here for the duration(next 25 years at least). I always think that my life is here and I have nothing back in Boston to go back to. Yes, friends, but I have great friends here (and my friends are one by one moving to Munich!! tongue.gif )

So, I'll be here!

I was in MUC for one year, but am now back in sunny London...I wouldn't rule out a return to Munich, but I have to say, now I'm back in London, I don't miss Munich half as much as I thought I might.
Inflatablewoman
Been here 4 years.

I will see what the shit is, after the world cup. Work dependant of course.
boomtown_rat
staying until at least the World Cup is also part of my plans!
Winegirl
I really don't know how much longer I'll be here but I'm not here for life. I love Munich but can't get a job here...seems it's too cold to grow grapes.
DrivinWest
SRTM? I wish! The military keeps a tight seal on that stuff.

I really do like Munich and it works for right here, right now, but I'm not a lifer.
Mbangura
With the exception of one home I have never lived in the same place for more than a year. I am ready give Munich five, I will finish University here, but then probably move on.
Jeeves
Been here 5 years - which is NOT the longest I have lived anywhere since I was old enough to decide for myself - but I can't see myself going anywhere else. Moved around enough already and can't think of anywhere I'd rather live (and work). It's not a decision to be made, do I go or do I stay, it's more something that just creeps up on you and you suddenly realise that you've been here for aeons.

@randy: Retirement, now that IS a frightening prospect.
SquirrelGirl
My boyfriend and I were kind of just driving through and decided we liked it, so we stayed! I can see us here for at least a year, but it depends on whether he can find work or not (I'm happily employed). I'm just enjoying something completely different from Wash D.C. and San Francisco, which are the only two places I've lived. Munich is very cool and the people are nice, so we've set up shop and are very happy here for now!

Jeeves, yes, exactly.
oli2000
I have been here 6 years, and I like it smile.gif I am not planning on moving away, but would do so if a good reason came up.
Katrina
Well after 5 years in Germany (6+ in total), I'm probably here for a while. In fact I could stay indefinitely.
Was however asked this morning if I would consider moving to The Netherlands, so God knows. There would have to be significant money involved though.
I do have days when I think "bugger this, I'm off to live with my brother in Auckland" but for the moment I'm here (but planning a trip over there).
Due to current tax reasons, I wouldn't retire here.
Johnny English
Only been here a year - kids are settled in nicely and we are near the in-laws. I would move again but actually cannot think of anywhere with that many more advantages!

Although I like skiing sun every day would be nice - but all the sunny places bring up issues as well. Oz seems too far, SA politically iffy, Middle East - need I mention.

So it will do for now and I enjoy it more than London!
Gator Fan
I have only been here 6 weeks out of a 3 year contract, so I can't say what the future holds. It is all career realated. So I am enjoying Munich.

After having spent the last 6 years working and living in Washington DC I can say that I really like the change.
Izabella
i came here with the intention of staying a year... signed a two year lease when i finally found the perfect apartment... now gramdma is so dependent on my twice weekly visits that i'm not sure i can ever leave unsure.gif

i've never been unhappy anywhere i've lived, every place has it's own special things to offer. as long as i can get my annual two months backpacking in... then i never feel like i'm missing out living someplace 'better'.

having said that, alaska & san fran are on the 'live there for a while' list.
ellewood
no. absolutely not for ever.
latecomer
been here 13 years. love it loads. but leaving next year as the missus wants to go home (new jersey - of all places ohmy.gif ). i still think its a great place to live, but there are other challenges out there too

ps: northern california would be grand but the weather is not the best - if its year round sun you want get to San Diego - really nice and easy to go south of the border ph34r.gif
Kat
I've been here 18 years, which counts as a life sentence in most countries. Lately though (read every winter) I've had a hankering for somewhere in the tropics. Or even just back to Florida from whence I come (though that idea makes me wince). cool.gif
eurobabs
Although I have only been here shy of 2 months, my intentions are to be here for life smile.gif and although those intentions may change, I can say with 10000000% certainty that I will never live in the US again. I do love my home state (MN) but I just dont belong there. Even when I was there I always came to Europe, even just to think when I had a decision to make (thanks to those airline benefits- free tickets).

Am facing 2 major hurtles though- 1. Non EU (right now can only freelance teach - no money there 2. NEED to learn German - is very difficult for me - I am a total left brain person. But I am determined to make it work here and to make a home here.
eurovol
Been here 7 years, bought a house and plan to be here awhile longer. Forever, no I don't think so. There are other places to see and people to do.
I do find it interesting just how many people have lived in and around DC as well. I lived in Germantown Md before moving to German town Munich. Perhaps an old fashioned night in NW DC is in order, now if we could only find the clubs like those in Dupont Circle. My wife and I used to love to go to the latin clubs there. wink.gif
Nicky
I've been here longer than anyone ... will stay as long as work holds out, but couldn't imagine retiring here ... Munich is not for old people - too icy in winter, everything's kinda heavy and awkward. A nice mild island is what's called for.
chucktduck
Been here 7 years total (military and civilian). How much longer I stay depends on what happens after I finish my MBA studies in 2006 and what job opportunities present themselves. I also want to be here for the world cup. After that we'll see. Though I love Munich and would love to stay for a while longer, I can't imagine staying for life and retiring here.
roots
I have never really been a resident of Munich but have been here a gazillion times. Never stayed here more than 8-10 weeks at a time. However, I love this city more than any city I have ever lived in. One of these days I will make Munich my home and once that happens I will stay for a long time. Since I am constantly jumping between Asia and the US few times a year, Munich is perfect for me geographically and logistically.

In the US I like Boston but it has only one problem--it is not Munich smile.gif.
erdbeere
if i can get a job in munich after i graduate then i guess i'll stay..if not then i prolly hafta go back to the US and bring my bf with me... but i'll most likely be in munich till summer of 2006

@ JE - Thanks for the link. I checked it out and it does have some good tips that I have not heard of before. It is so weird that I can take an airplane apart and put it back together, Can learn a new computer program inside and out within a week, but I cant remember simple little words in German rolleyes.gif URRGGGHHHH!!!

But I am determined and if it takes me 10 years (not including the 10 or so I have sparatically taken touristic German or a Beg German course smile.gif ) I WILL learn it.
Thanks again,
Barbara

When I was younger, I crashed my BMX. Fractured skull, claret everywhere, very nasty. I don't remember a damn ting about any of it, and my mum said my brain was probably blocking the memory on purpose, because it was painful.
Thats only what your mind is doing here. Its refusing to let any German words stay in your head, just like white corpuscles push dirt out of your blood. It's a rare gift, and one to cherish.

I am here until I leave. My woman mentioned moving to Austria recently. Austria. they don't even have their own language, and the one they use...German. Idiots. They could have used English, we would allow that, but having learnt our lesson once before, I'd make them sign an agreement that vowels serve a purpose, you cannot just drop them out of words, and that you cannot rename sports. AND, there would be lessons in how to use the word "already" correctly.

just about to move and hoping to be a lifer! been visitn for the last 10 years so thought it about time I made the permanent leap - can't wait!

I've been in the land of the great white sausage for 14 years now, lived in Munich for 6 of those. Great town. Didn't plan on anything when I came here but now I've got kids here so I'll be staying for a wee while longer. As my son already has a whacky sense of humour I've got to stay here and do my bit to support him. Can't let him be the only one in the village who understands Father Ted.

Salut à tous,

Recent member, first time replier,,,just want to add a few words on this topic.

Am here since about a full year and a couple of months now, the reason which brought me here is the same as the 9 out of ten guys you'd ask this question they'd tell'ya "ben, une nana".
Like many the fire died, the passion faded away, the chapter ended as the tornado comes
and goes.
Now am solely here for my work, Graphic Designer/Publicity that is and hard the admit
i got very much attached to Munich clean streets, its overall mentality, its foods, the cover it offers me, and so on.
Considering the hard time am having with increasing my vocabulary and genereting new clientele, i should go back but as formentioned, this place got me addicted to so much that goin' back home is a second option.

over + out
