My wife and I recently bought a house out in the sticks of Schleswig Holstein. We would like to get on-line as soon as possible but, unfortunately, there is no DSL available. There is a 'normal' phone line at the house but if we want a broadband connection, is a satellite link the only way to go? If so, does anyone have any experience of internet via satellite, costs etc.?

Mmm, hadn't heard of them, but it isn't exactly what you could call cheap!

@Cruiser, where abouts are you in Schleswig Holstein? It might be worth asking at your local council offices if anything is planned for the near future, because the Land has just recently set aside a few million Euros to bring DSL out into the sticks.

Here's a site I found listing some satellite providers, "Satellite DSL" in Google gave a lot of other links, as well.

if you are only wanting to browse the web, then satellit could be a solution, but forget doing anything like playing games on it as the latency is utterly dreadful. I believe the upload is done via your existing telephone line, so you will be severely restricted in terms of upload speed.

On Modern systems, Uploads are done via satt. also..

Latency does suck, so no VOIP too..

Cheap? Who ever said it would be cheap. If its your only option then your going to pay..
And 80 Eur a month is not that bad. You should have seen the prices a few years ago.

Thanks everyone. I do not play games and, in hindsight, we'll go for good-old-fashioned dial-up. For our needs, this will suffice I'm sure.

If he's living so far out in the sticks that he can't get DSL, then it's extremely unlikely that cable is available!

Yes internet on a satellite is only good for browsing and maybe downloading small files. VoIP and online gaming will be terrible using this route.
