Hi there,

A friend has just got hold of 12 month working holiday visa for Germany and will be arriving in September 2008. I'm doing some research here on his behalf to try and smooth the transition.

He only speaks English at this stage but is degree/masters qualified and would be willing to do most any job to start while he gets to grip with the culture and the language.

I've done some research through the forums and on other sites on this topic but there are still a few questions that I can't seem to answer

1. What is the most readily available work /quickest work to find for someone who does not speak German?
2. Approximately how long is it likely to take to find such work after arrival?
3. What sort of pay can one expect for unskilled work? Is there a minimum wage?

Cheers,

No minimum wage here, and given he has a Masters degree, teaching English on a freelance basis is probably his best bet, unless, of course, he has a finance/banking background and an MBA or Masters in a business discipline. There is also a thread on English-language consulting jobs in Frankfurt.

I would try recruitment firms like Euro London or Huxley. They have a lot of entry level jobs posted and sometimes with luck you might find something that is only English speaking. Worst case scenario you can always teach English at schools like Berlitz or Inlingua or Wall Street institute. They´re always hiring!

Best of luck!

Do what the agencies say. Learn German. Go on an intensive course when you get here. Get a qualification at the end to prove what you can do - Goethe or TELC to at least B1 level.

Obtain any other internationally recognised qualifications that are usually asked for here for jobs in your field.

And enter the market and sell yourself on your own terms. Make and demonstrate a clear commitment to employment in Germany and the route you choose. Avoid the "I'm only doing this because my partner is here" line. I often hear it suggested that this indicates lack of professional commitment to the job (ie. it's just an expedient time filler for you rather than a professional commitment). And - where I have seen individuals do it - they are often unable to sustain themselves long term.

Hey everybody,

I'm an Australian girl living in the Frankfurt region, looking around for a new job. With help from this board (thanks Toytown!) I got a job working in an English speaking nursery, but the combination of low pay and limited hours means that despite the cuteness of the kids, I really need to find another position. Does anybody have an ideas or information to share about what kinds of full time employment are recommended or available? I'm very flexible, willing to try new things and would be interested to hear about all kinds of jobs. Thank you for your help!

Could try UPS in frankfurt unloading or loading containers pay is 13 euro 65 cents per hour and if you work the nightshift you get an extra 3 euro an hour which is tax free. I work in the unloading dept on the night shift 22-45 until about 02-15 if you do the loading you work a bit longer. With tax class 1 for working 17.5 hours per week mon-fri you will take home about 1000 euro. They also do student contracts where you work 3 days a week , but you can work extra and use the extra hours you have saved up to take off while you have exams.
I cound nt speak hardly any german when I 1st started just walked into the HR office filled out a form, got a 1 hour trail 2 days later and then got the job.
The work is shit, very hard manual labour so be warned.
