I plan to travel around Switzerland for up to 9 days this month.

I have checked the SBB site and think it best to get the 8 or 4 day Swiss Pass. It says I can travel for free on the Swiss Travel System during the validity of the pass. What I would like to know is, (i) does that work like a hop-on hop-off ticket even for intercity travel? Or would I have to book and obtain a ticket prior to travel; and (ii) does it give you free/discounted entry into attractions e.g. museums, zoo in the major cities, like the Zurich 24 or 72-hour card?

I am a budget traveller. Any recommendations for nice, clean, conveniently located hostels/B&B/hotels in major cities and villages where there are main tourist attractions would be appreciated.
