Hi,
i am on the lookout for buying a N95 without contract and came across this.
http://cgi.ebay.de/Nokia-N95-8GB-Handy-ohn...1QQcmdZViewItemHow is it possible for these people to sell it for 201€ when all other shops quote in the order of approx 450-600€?
Any idea'? any advice on whether i can buy it?
I saw the sellers reputation and its good in
ebay. Looking forward to buying N95 in ebay. Your advices on this would be really appreciated.
thanks in advance and cheers.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
eBay is an auction site. You bid on an item. The price goes up. This auction has another three days to run.
Honestly. I sometimes wonder how these people get up in the morning on their own.
The auction is at € 201 with
three days and one hour still to go. Expect to see the price increase before the auction end.
Edit: STB beat me to it. But I was more polite.

thanks for the enlightenment. I know how ebay works and the auctioning details. Recently came across a collegue who told me he bought an N98, 8GB for 250€ with an auction price starting at 201€.
It was my mistake for not having posted the question clearly in the first place.
Now, what are the chances that a N95, 8gb bought for 250€ is authentic?

Or what are the chances that your colleague's story is authentic?
It's just a phone. They all make and receive calls and piss off the people around you. It doesn't really matter which one you get.

I am looking out for an smart phone with GPS facility. So, wanted to see the reviews abt the offer on
ebay b4 i put a bid on it. As said, if i bid for 250€ and its available for that amount, then i will have to scratch my head abt the authenticity or at best, dont bid.

N98 is no yet released to the market.

For a phone offered without contract, it is unlikely that you will get a new N95 8GB for 250 EUR even from ebay. The item may be authentic, but in most cases the seller is not liable for the guarentee.

i was just looking at the specs and it says that the N95 has WLAN. can this be used for full connectivity like surfing and Skype or do they limit what functions you can use the WLAN for?

so long as your provider doesn't give you a handset with a 'customised' (read: castrated) firmware then the Nokia WLAN lets you do anything you can via any other WLAN connection (so long as there's the software available for the handset). I've got the E51 rather than the N95 and use it for VOIP calls (SIP standard rather than Skype proprietary protocal), web radio streams, etc. over WLAN, without having had to install any third-party apps. Actually the WLAN (together with Nokia Maps) was the reason I bought that phone.

There is a skype application for Symbian 60 platform which runs on most of E and N series of Nokia. And it can be used with the WLAN.

I've got the N95 and they don't limit the use for the WLAN. The earlier Vodafone firmwares did however. The only problem is streaming Video (i.e. youtube) doesn't work too well. I used the VOIP quite a bit when I was in Thailand to make calls through voipcheap.com. Worked well.

Just out of interest, I tracked the
eBay auction from the original post. It ended on €406.

That's the fun with
ebay auctions.
123handydiscount offers it for the same price, with a 2 year guarantee.

The N95 from Vodafone comes with customised firmware, and you can't upgrade it to the latest versions directly from Nokia. At least, you can't if you use the official update tools from Nokia - there may be a hack available that will let you do it.
No idea if Vodafone's version prevents you from using VOIP.

Fring is free software for many mobiles (including Nokia S60 based phones - the N-Series) which allow you to use Skype (spit, spit), real VoIP, MSN Messenger and many more internet toys over both WLAN and GPRS.
Any yes, Spud, it's easy to modify a Vodafone-branded phone so it can load new Nokia software (which also removes some GPS based restrictions Vodafone add too)

I never ever did get Fring working well on my N95. I ended up using the normal integrated VOIP software/setup and it worked fine with voipcheap.com etc.

I never used fring for calling but I did use it to IM on my E65, and it worked quite well. I uninstalled it because I updated the software on my phone and it kept giving me some kind of error message (to check something) and as I don't really have access to an open WLAN right now anyway, I haven't bothered setting it up again (can't be bothered setting up our wireless at home as an access point right now).
