I was told to go to the Police, but I'm not sure what to do where to go or what to ask for. (very little German here) Do you go to the closet Police station to where you live??Is there a time limit?? I lost it on the tram in May and have been checking at the F¨undburo ever since. The lady is sick of looking at my face. I want to claim it on my insurance but was told I need to have a police report. Can anyone help??

go to your nearest police station to report the theft and have the police report you need for insurance purposes filled out. not sure if there is a time limit though...
take any paperwork you have for the phone, and maybe take a German-speaking friend with you ´just in case´.

Was it lost or stolen? Not that it matters at the moment. If one finds something of value, one is required to turn it in to the police and if no one claims it, it is yours after 6 months.
That being said.
I found a phone on the S-Bahn last week, it was unlocked, so I redialed the last number and was able to get the phone back to the owner.
Scenario: Manu picks up Gus from the S-Bahn station. They are driving along and and Manu's phone rings and it says "Gus" on the the caller display. Manu looks at Gus and says "How do you do that?", "Do what?","Call me without having your phone in your hands..."
I realize now that leaving the phone unlocked could be beneficial in the return of a lost phone. Maybe a sticker with "If found call this number for reward." would suffice for a locked phone.
Take care,

First thing you do is call your provider and get it demobilised. If some one is calling around on your phone it could be expensive. Then you go to a police station and report it stolen. As to be able to claim it on your insurance well keep us informed.

I've reported a bike as stolen. You just get a form to fill out. They wrote to me some time later to tell me they'd not found it!
If you feel your German's not up to it, take a German speaking mate of course.

A lot of insurance policies require an extra claus to cover mobiles; check if you are even covered, if not, wave all possibilities of a replacement other than 100% from your own pocket goodbye.

And check when the insurance company wants the report to be dated. You frequently have to report any loss within 24 hours, so after two months you've obviously missed this by a mile.
Just came from the Policei. They were very nice. Asked for the IBEI number (It's on the box and you also get 2 copies on stickies) I was told ( I think) that the phone can be traced by using this..a kid in the waiting room said if you have GPS they can even locate the phone (Like LoJack) as long as it is still on. It was an unlocked phone, and I am assuming that the finder just took out my SIM card and replaced it with her own. ( I called the number when I lost it and some girl answered and then hung up on me. The insurance company will cover it but I had to have a Police Report first. Everyone wants to know why it took 2 months to report it..but what can I say?? I'm an eternal optimist and hoped someone would bring it in. All my phone numbers and photos etc were on the sim..so I've learned to save them on the phone instead!! lesson learned.
Thanks for all of your help, guys!
