English speakers living in Halle (Saale)

Newcomer introductions, info on meetups, etc.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I've been living in Halle for about a month, I'm here doing research. Essentially I haven't run into anyone that speaks english, outside of the professors at the University (and some of the students). And I don't speak German unfortunately. Anyone in Halle? Can anyone give me tips about Halle? Thanks
the vicar
Yep, other English speaking life does indeed exist in and around Halle. How long are you sentenced to stay in Halle? What tips are you after?

I'm only here for another 6 weeks, so it's not a very long stay. Can you recommend any good places to eat (for cheap), I'm a student after all. And how does the taking back of bottles to grocery stores work... I haven't been brave enough to actually try this yet. What sucks really bad is that I live by the Krollwitz tram stop so essentially, I am close to NOTHING.
the vicar
Hi 710,

Sorry to hear you're only here for another 6 weeks. At least you've picked the best months to visit the town. Halle is "geil" in summer.

Ok, for cheap and good nosh near Krollwitz, try this place

Gosenschenke
Burgstraße 71
06114 Halle-Saale

Hmmm...looks good doesn't it. Well it's a bit nicer inside. It's student pub near Krollwitz. Across the bridge with the horse and cow on it. It used to do good cheap food. Hopefully still does.

Taking back bottles is easy. If the bottle has got "Pfandflasche" on it, take it back and hold out your hand for some dosh, if it hasn't simply throw bottle over shoulder and forget it. I can give you a real life demonstation of how this works if you like. You buy 4 bottles of quality beer, I'll come round and empty them for you. After that we take the empty bottles back to the supermarket/petrol station and collect the deposit. You then buy another 4 bottles and we keep repeating the process until you've got the hang of how it works.

We finally get some totty show up and what do you do, Vicar? Bloody well scare them off with your "I'll come round and drink beer rountine" and then you recommend the worst dive in town. For fuck's sake, man!

@710 I'll buy you lunch and show you some decent joints, if you're interested.
the vicar
It was a joke unlike your rather obvious attempt at a lunch time knobbing.

I am an American guy, moved here 5 months ago for a job. I am 27 years old, and I am looking to see if there are any fun people who want to grab some drinks sometime? I work quite a bit, but still make time to have fun, and let loose. Heck, you have to! I moved here from America, and I have made some good friends...but would be very much interetsed in meeting some fun English speaking people to socialize with. I live in Halle, but I am also in Leipzig often. I would be interested in meeting both guys and girls, and any age...just looking to grab some beers and make some friends. Hope you all are doing well.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,

welcome to the forum.

Check the monthly meetup in Halle if you haven't already done so.

The next one is Saturday February 7 I believe.

Arrive early to see the strippers.
the vicar
It's more a case of getting the best seats, front seat punters normally get to play with the baby oil.

Yes, everyone is welcome on February 7.

Hi Gaz,

I hope your loved one doesn't wake you up when she goes off to work and she still has enough time to do the housework for you. I'm spending most my time in Leipzig at the moment (saucy nurse bit). The Vicar is currently having a big strop (grown man and all that) so most of the vicarage action in on hold at the moment. I'm looking to get an English table going in Leipzig shortly. I shall be calling on your support during the coming weeks for that. In meantime, I hope she looks after you properly. Have you brought up the subject of a little spending money to be paid in cash every week yet?

Cheers,

PS Have you got a motorbike or play the drums?

Hi Les,
Yes she's so selfish that way, i do complain but she doesnt see it my way at all! Women are a funny breed!
where the hells Leipzig? I have trouble finding Halle in the morning and i live there.
I am yet a virgin in the (drinking in Halle without my girl reutine) so id like to pop that cherry asap, so you may be a likely candidate of the coming home pissed blame. Well it'd be nice to say its someone elses fault?
P.S. I play the drums superbly, but then i wake up; the same unfortunatly for the bike.

Ah, glad to see there's a like minded soul in these strange parts. I've got certain things on the boil at the moment. But I'll do my best to sort somethig out soon. I might even get the sulking old priest out of his shed for a beer or two.

Are these monthly meet-ups in Halle still going on? I just moved here and would love to meet some English speaking folks.

Cheers,
Josephine
