Competition set to resume Wednesday morning with arrival of new swell. From the Billabong contest website:

Day 6 Called Off - Look's Prime for Day 7

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Tuesday, July 15, 2008) – After a day of waiting for a predicted new swell to arrive, the Billabong Pro has officially been called off at 2:45pm local time. After monitoring conditions at Jeffreys Bay for close to eight hours, event organizers have officially called Round 3 of the Billabong Pro off for the day.

“First we waited for the wind to clock around, which it did as forecast, but the swell never got consistent enough to run heats, Contest Director Mike Parsons said. “There were some nice waves which came through throughout the day, but when you looked at a 30-minute period, there were only one or two good waves.

The contest director, surfer’s rep and head judge determine whether or not there are enough waves for each competitor to post two good scoring rides in a heat before calling the event on or off each day. Unfortunately, they didn’t see enough scoring potential for the remaining 32 ASP World Tour surfers at JBay today.

“There is a really nice swell, the second part of this one, on the map for tomorrow and we are still optimistic that tomorrow will be a really great day, Parsons said. “We’re down to two days left and we just felt that running on Wednesday and Thursday was a much better option. All of the surfers were onboard with that decision there is just not enough consistency to run heats today.

At this point, it is highly likely that Round 3 of the Billabong Pro will start at 7:15 tomorrow morning but an official call will be made at 7am.

Contest director, Mike Parsons was hopeful of banging out six heats this afternoon but after deliberation with the surfers, decided it was just too inconsistent to run.

Good news is the next two days is going to be like Christmas come early at J-Bay with Surfline predicting a decent swell to roll in over night and hold throughout Thursday.

The contest will be starting at 7:15am local time tomorrow morning in the hope of running through to 5pm and getting all of round three and some of round four out of the way. The plan at this stage would then be to finish the event on Thursday.

Tune in early tomorrow morning for the official call.

Does ZAF refer to South Africa because it is the first time I have seen that acronym - always used ZAR?
SFOtoMUC
To my knowledge, insofar as the ASP is concerned, ZAF denotes the South African athletes. A job well done by the locals for advancing further this year ! There efforts were undone though, including World Champion Mick Fanning (Australia) by Kelly Slater (Florida), once again, effectively ending the season for everyone else. The final heat video is worth a look on the billabong site as morning conditions were classic J-Bay perfection.

From Billabong: Slater Scalps Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay Fourth ASP Victory This Season

QUOTE
JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Thursday, July 17, 2008) – He’s done it again. Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) beat reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) today to win the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, earn his 38th ASP World Tour victory and claim the fourth event on the 2008 ASP World Tour.

“I didn’t realize I was going to be overwhelmed by it, but I haven’t been in this position before, at this point of the year, with this many wins, Slater said. “There are great things going on in my life so I’m just trying to soak it up and be appreciative.

Surfing his 14th season on the ASP World Tour, Slater is still the only member of the Top 45 to win an event this season. The one tournament Slater lost was won by an event wildcard. He now has a 1262 point lead on World No. 2 Joel Parkinson and is in commanding contention to claim his 9th ASP World Title.
