Hey,
this is my first topic here. My name's Tom, 22. I'm living in Wuerzburg.
I'm not American by birth and neither do I have the citizenship but I lived there quite a long time so I consider myself somewhat American and not really German.
I have often problems to get along with Germans and don't really understand their way of thinking.
Would be cool to get to know some Americans here. So if you're interested just post a line.

my suggestion: certain bars/pubs in Schweinfurt, e.g. Irish Pub, Mad, Country Club... Plenty of Americans there!

Ya, I'm familiar with those places. Not really my speed. I'm looking to meet some additional English speakers that are trying to intergrate fully into the German culture, and I haven't met many at those places that are trying this. I didn't come here to pretend that I am living in America.

Oh, I plan to make a few trips to München soon. It is such a nice city to visit.
Hanna, how is it that you know so much about SW? Most of the people I have met during my travels within the cities of Germany don't even know where it is and couldn't find it on a map.

my ex-boyfriend was stationed in SW and I still have a bunch of friends there, I'm actually going there next Friday because of a friend's birthday! But yeah, not a very well-known place in Germany... Although it's a really nice little town, I like it up there

I posted in another area (military) asking about Schweinfurt recently. I might have a job opportunity there. Since this thread came alive, I wondering what do those that live there think of it? I don't do bars either, so what else is going on there? How's the housing? The hiking/biking/walking/daytripping thing? What's it close to? Sorry, can't seem to find much info elsewhere.

well I don't know much about housing, but I could ask a friend if you'd like... Downtown Schweinfurt is really nice, but it's an industrial city, especially along the river. There are good restaurants (my favorite is Aposto right at Marktplatz) and the whole area is really nice, there are a lot of wineries, nice areas for biking, lakes. The daytripping is great too, there are castles (Schloss Werneck for example) in the area, cities like Würzburg, Nürnberg, Bamberg, Rothenburg. The Altmühltal isn't too far away, a very popular place for biking/hiking/canoeing. Hope that gives you a little impression, I only spent my weekends there, but loved it!

Schweinfurt is a nice quiet industry town of about 50k people (small). As for what is happening, SW doesn't have a very large or diverse University (I think only Sciences and Nursing) so there isn’t what I would call a large group of people between the ages of 22 and 30. This really shows up for the nightlife. There are only three or four Discos, a handfull of happening bars, a couple good weinstubes, and three or four quaint beergardens. But, there are plenty of cafés and ice cream bars in the town center, a huge bowling ally, a brand new mall, and a brand new movie theater just outside the center. I think, the way the city is progressing, in a few years this area will be booming with new people.
That being said, most of my co-workers choose to live in Würzburg or Bamberg and take the train into town every day as those cities offer a bit more to them. Both are only a ½ hour trainride away, and are great places to visit often. Würzburg for the scenery and nightlife, and Bamberg for the brewing tradition in addition to the scenery and nightlife.
Housing, from what I’ve been told, is inexpensive compaired to the rest of Germany. I think 300 EUR Kalt should get you a decent 2 room flat with garage parking spot.
There are lots of oportunities in the area for hiking, biking, swimming, walking, etc. There are several wooded areas surounding SW which have paths for hiking, or mountain biking. For swiming, there is a huge public pool just on the outskirts of town. There is also a paved bike path that runs along the Main river. Folowing the river south it goes towards Würzburg through the Frankenwein area with beautiful vineyards on hills overlooking the river. Going east it takes you towards Bamburg though rolling hills with fields of rapeseed and wheat. Another more chalenging bikeride is heading toward the Rhön Mountains which are just a bit north of here.
For longer trips, Würzburg has a main hub where most of the major trains run though. It usually isn’t a problem to find a train going anywhere on the weekends. And the Bayernticket wochenende will get you all over Bavaria for cheap. For driving, SW is located close to the middle, and it is easy to get to most places in Germany in just a few hours. (depending on traffic)
