Can I attend a university anywhere in Europe?

Study options for non-EU citizen with EU spouse

I recently posted a question asking about attending a university in Germany since I was now married to a German citizen. The responses I got steered me toward studying in a country where it's main inhabitants speak English, such as England or the Netherlands.

If I'm married to a German citizen, is it possible to study in an english speaking country? Again, I think an education is important, and I'd rather not wait several years for my German to be "perfect" up to standards that would be acceptable at a German university.

I'm pretty sure there are universities in Germany that teach classes in English - generally they're labelled "International" universities, I think there's one in Bremen. Good luck finding somewhere to continue your education!

you can study in the UK or Ireland but would probably need to pay fees. These would be VERY high if you do not have EU citizenship but relatively low if your marriahge has led to you becoming a German citizen.

Alternatively, you could look at doing an Open University degree. You could study at the OU from your home in Germany since there will be OU tutors relatively local to you. The fees are less and you may also be able to get financial help.

Despite it being distance learning, the OU is one of the UK's best teaching universities and its degree courses are often highly or even top ranked compared with other universities.

Although BTC is absolutely right about the teaching quality of OU, if you are able to study on your own (admittedly not everyone can) and then take a tough final exam for the entire course grade, I would suggest a program from the University of London's external program because it will cost you much less- tuition rates for OU courses are considerably higher for residents of Germany. UoL degrees are highly respected.

There are some private universities in Germany where you can study in English even at the bachelors level; however, since they are private the tuition costs won't be anything like they are at the public German universities.
