Life in the town of Rodgau, near Frankfurt

Experiences and advice for newcomers

Hello All,

I’ve read a lot about peoples’ experiences living in the Frankfurt area, but even with a search, I’m not finding much reference to the Rodgau area (maybe I should be searching on the individual Stadtteil?). We are moving to Frankfurt in November. My wife will take a job with the Bank of New York, and our family is in the Augsburg area, so we want to be south of Frankfurt, near an S-Bahn stop. My wife’s new boss recommends the Rodgau area, so I’m looking for other people’s experiences.

Our criteria include moderate housing costs (less expensive but not depressing), S-Bahn line, easy access to a route (Autobahn) to Augsburg area, big enough to have some of the comforts of city-living, and some expatriate/international community would be nice as well. Finding a job for me isn't a criteria because I work from home via the Internet.

Commute to the banking district should be around a 30 minute train ride.

My wife is German, and we have an infant and a bilingual 3 year old. We’re looking to live in Germany for the forseeable future and plan on putting the kids through German schools.

Also, can anyone recommend an area in the southeast of Frankfurt (not necessarily Rodgau) that has castle ruins and good hiking/mountain-biking potential?

I grew up in Rodgau and got to say - great place for a kid! Not so much fun for teenagers... ;-) It's a nice little town and has (now) a direct train into Frankfurt. But you also might consider Dreieich! That's also a small town south of Frankfurt - good for families and it has it's own castle ruin (in Dreieichenhain)! They have festivals around it and some other events. It has a public swimming poool which is very nice and it's closer to Frankfurt. Motorway A3 and A5 are also very close. Rent is probably about the same as Rodgau.
