Check for 'Mougins'. It's a pretty nice hilly village (Indeed, all are hilly villages/towns when you get into the interior parts) also known as "Picasso's Village".
Other options include 'Grasse' (The world's perfume capital), 'Vence', 'Antibes', et al. If you plan well, you can probably find some cheap options.

Here's a link for you, if you wanna know more about 'French Riviera' : French Riviera

EDIT: Are you gonna use the public transport or your own vehicle, when staying around those places?

If I was you, I would stay around the 'Riviera' parts for some days and in the interior parts for some days. As for the 'Interior parts of the mainland', I prefer more towards Draguignan/Flayosc/Sillans De Cascade. Its pretty relaxing out there. Also, 'Verdon Du Gorges' (European Grand Canyon) is nearby to those places. Its worth it, to drive around those places.

As for renting out, there are hundreds of sites on the internet which can provide you with accommodation (all over French Riviera). As per your plan and requirements, you gotta spend some time and check out things by yourself. An other option would be to go to the nearest 'Travel Agency' and check their offers. Most of the times, they have some cheap accommodation/hotel offers (specially, if your vacation time is minimally for a week or more).

You might want to watch out for the speeding cameras that have been introduced there. They warn you in advance with a bg white sign however it is easy not to notice them and the fines are much more severe that Germany.

Some Cannes apartments here to rent:

Dates for events at the Convention Center there. Some you might not want to avoid:

Make sure you plan your visit to Cannes so that it doesn't coincide with any convention. Last time I was there there was some mobile phone / GSM fair and they had the whole beach ruined with their ugly tents, there was security everywhere, roads blocked off... it was an awful mess. Had planned a day, left after an hour.

Same here! Have been there when the 'Cannes Film Festival' was happening. I couldn't find parking anywhere. We drove through the beachfront, a couple of times and finally parked it somewhere inside, far-off from the beach.
