Just curious where all the Texans came from and do we really want to admit where we come from and did we all vote for W? Heh. heh.
roark
you know where I´m from and no I didn´t opt for W. Is it just us girls? There´ve
got to be more out there! smile.gif
Elfenstar
someone else posted he was from houston so i know we're not alone. whenever i say i'm from texas, they automatically think dallas (and do i know j.R.!), then i say austin, all the germans think houston and then they say "houston we've got a problem" -- heh heh and then mention good ole georgi boy. ugh. the pain. the pain!

going home for christmas? am leaving on dec. 23, mü-gatwick-dallas-austin. maybe the dallas-austin flight it is overbooked. i do this route just for that.
roark
nah, we were just there for FIESTA in April and I just got back from a trip alone in
july. tell a german your from san antonio and they say "but you said you´re American" its usually cheaper and easier to get a direct flight from frankfurt to houston, then rent a car and drive down. I guess it depends on how much sightseeing you wanna drag your bf along on. overnight in houston, see nasa, nod in the general direction of port arthur (janis joplin) take him to Gruene, fredricksburg, then home then san anton...
Elfenstar
right on, GRUEN! i went to school in san marcos and we used to tube down the guadaloop, then go to gruen for dinner. unfortunately i can't remember the name of that restaurant we used to go to all the time. if you could, it was the best place to wait tables in the summer. i worked at GRINS. which is funny, all that german influence and look where i am! i am gonna' take my bf there for some dancing at Gruen Hall and of course drink lots of shiner bock (which also comes from a bayern).
maybe the reason i don't care for Oktoberfest was because it brought up bad memories of the one in new braunsfels and how the school would rent buses to take us down there (those old yellow ones) and on the way back all you could smell were beer and sausage and the remnants of them if you know what i mean.
roark
hey elf, where´s your bf from?my mann is from Frankenland, north Baveria. The
"REAL" bavarians down here don´t consider him as one of them. If it were up to
him, we´d be back in TX. For now I´m content here...
Elfenstar
my bf is from baden which makes adjusting here horrible 'cause they all ask him if he's swabian which is a HUGE no, no. the baden-swaben "hate" goes way back. but the dialects are similar sounding to a "foreigner" so he has to make this quite clear. funnily, when he meets a bavarian who calls him swabian, he says "and you're from franken" and then they either grin or shut up.

sadly, since texas is relatively flat my bf has no interest in going there. he grew up living between the vogesen (?), black forest and alps. even in munich he misses the mountains (which are soooo far away).
roark
my mann LOVES the sunshine and the heat, mexican food,a frosty cold beer at a lazy all day cookout, tubeing, ice chests full of goodies, spicy peanuts and the hill country.I think he over romantisizes TX. here I love 4 seasons, snow, that fact that its not over 100 degrees on a summer night, even at 3 a.m. I can walk fearlessly through the woods and know that the funny sounds aren´t rattlers its especially comforting to know that a rattler will never seek winter warmth in the comfort of our garage or car. 28 years of blinding sun was enough for me. Hey, have you ever noticed that the sky is A LOT closer here?

I am from Texas, If some wants to invoke the Dubya correlation, no prob. GWB, Born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. He ain´tno dang Texan. Dixie chicks were wrong.
take care,
space
DrivinWest
Hey, transplanted Texan here. Born and raised in Westchester, New York, schooled in Nashville, moved to Houston 4.5 years ago. I gotta say, I'm looking forward to leaving this place for Munich come January smile.gif. I love parts of Texas, but Houston is not one of them.
roark
Howdy there!
I´m a teensy bit confused.Your looking forward to leaving Munich? you say your looking forward to leaving "this place" meaning houston? In any case, cheers!
sparty

leaving this place for Munich

seems to me leaving Houston to go to Munich
DrivinWest
Yup, leaving Houston for Munich. 5 weeks and counting...

So then "DrivinWest" is a bit misleading ain't it? smile.gif

I'm also a native Texan even though I ain't lived there in quite awhaal nor do I dosido or otherwise resemble a cowboy. Agree with you on Houston...nasty nasty summers. Come to think of it, the whole state is pretty unbearable in the summer but Houston is like living in a steam room. I'm from Dallas myself but I think Austin is the best place to live in Texas.
Elfenstar
i think we'll have to have a real texas bbq when the sun comes out again. could be cool. maybe we can smuggle some mesquite logs from somewhere and make some ribs. mmmm. i can make a decent guacamole.
Ketchup
Sounds like a good idea. Who's gonna bring the Shiner?

Actually Dubya was born and raised in Texas. Sorry. His daddy went there before junior was born to cash in on the oil craze.

Still makes the renaming of the Houston airport and the sighting of the George Herbert Walker Bush statue as something of an anamoly to me. Seriously, he ain't no Texan.

I grew up in Ohio, but went to Houston every summer and Christmas from the time I was 8 so my family there still asks me "when are you comin' home?" Bad enough my parents moved out of Texas, it's TOTALLY BIZARRE and worthy of some sort of intervention that I moved to New York City and now...Germany? Clearly, I'm the victim of defective genes (due to the migration of my wayward Texan parents). rolleyes.gif

Anyway. Hi, y'all.

Am hoping to hop down to the brewery once home. Was never old enough at college to do it, but am taking my bf with so we gotta' do some touristy things. Shiner was brewed by a bavarian who emigrated to TX.
iain
I dont know if anybody has pointed this out yet or not, but all you texans sould go to google and type in miserable failure and then hit im feeling lucky (english google of course) and check out what pops up it is really funny. and just to clear the air if anyone hates me for pointing this out, it was a texan who showed me this.
michnic
Must be something about the Shrub.

As of late, yes. I did go from New York to Tennessee to Texas so it used to hold true smile.gif

Hey elf, SWT girl are you? If you do happen to make it to Houston before the 28th I'll give you and your guy a REAL tour of NASA (Shuttle & ISS mission control, Gemini & Apollo mission control, space shuttle simulator, etc). The tram tour sucks and it's really expensive.
davidfromttu
Hi all! Yet another Texan in Munich... I just moved from Ulm Germany. I was born and raised in Texas and lived all over - in South, East, North and West Texas. I spent most of my life in the DFW area though. If the snow ever melts and yall have a Texas BBQ, I would love to come!

David
Elfenstar
welcome to TT david. sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!

have yet to have that texas bbq, but then again it is winter! as soon it gets to at least 15°, we will have to change that!

which part of texas do you claim as home? i'm an austinite, albeit born in chicago.
rlp1124
Howdy fellow Texans!
I'ts nice to see that there are others of "us" around here! I moved here in January with my boyfriend. We've both been living in Dallas the past few years. I went to school at A&M, born and raised all over the country. Funny you all are talking about a BBQ, we've been planning one also - just as soon as the weather turns nice! I guess it's just etched in our brains somewhere; warm weather=BBQ & cold Shiner!
Take care ya'll -
Becky
Sonya
Transplanted Texan Here - only lived there for 3.5 yrs but it feels more like home than Chicago. Lived in Houston, love Austin, plan to get there someday...

I am moving back to Houston in 20 days. So, for me the BBQ and Shiner are just 20 days away! I cannot wait. Sad, I live in Bavaria - land of beer - and I miss Shiner!

I would give anything right now for a Taco Cabana steak fajita!

If the BBQ happens before April 22nd, count me in!

-Sonya
DrivinWest
YOU SUCK! OK, not really, but you are making me homesick. I spent 4.5 years in Houston and while it isn't my favorite city in the world I do miss things... mostly food come to think of it... TACO CABANA!!! FREEBIRDS!!!

I'll be in Houston from the 16th to the 27th and I've got Mission Burrito, Cafe Adobe, Freebirds, etc. on my list of places to hit.

Shiner, however, I'm not a big fan of

BTW, I agree that Austin is an absolutely amazing city and hope to live there some day as well.

Tried to post b4 ... may be a repeat. Anyhoo...Texans in Munich! Transplant Texans in Munich! I may have died and gone to heaven. Are there any reformed hicks out there...peeps that can actually trade tall tales, or better yet, photos involving 4H, blue eyes shadow, or big hair courtesy the gravity defying power of aquanet? Ever hanker for Dr. Pepper or actually know the ingredients in frito pie? Do you belieive that Shiner not only tastes good but makes an excellent hair conditioning treatment and bbq marinade? Anyone? anyone?

I myself landed in a small Texas town from NYC circa puberty years. Totally whacked my brains. Spent quality years in Austin, hooked up with a life long Houstonite...Followed with more transplant years in MidWest IL and No. California. I found food, people and spots to love in all places wub.gif

Recently visited San Antionio and Houston...the restaurants were the same...great food, freezing AC cold on the inside whilst 80 and sticky on the outside. Felt extremely small in my little white rental car next all the dooleys and SUVs.
Elfenstar
DW you don't like Shiner? blasphemy tongue.gif
i thought the starkbier at the festival tasted remarkably like shiner, especially since shiner is a bock beer although undoubtedly not as strong!

maybe may 1 would be a good day for bbqing? never bbqed in munich though. where are some public spots? anyone know? may 1 is a holiday btw, stores closed even on saturday. i'll have to look into a venue.
roark
I´m feeling the need for a cold frosty beer, warm sunshine and a wood burning BBQ. My hubby brought back a big ass ice chest from San Antonio, the thing is where do ya find ICE?
Sonya
www.eisfactory.de

they deliver, have not tried this.

They also have places around the city to buy it. We bought it by the entrance to A8 richtung Salzburg.

Not cheap, but if needed, who cares...
Keydeck
Or as I have suggested many times, just get a big plastic bag or whatever, go to your local boozer and ask them to fill it up for you. Worst case scenario is they say no, best case is that you've got a source of free ice. I've done this plenty of times in various pubs here and never had a problem. Ask and you shall receive.
butterbean
I've brought my big cooler from the States as well. When I finally get my kitchen installed, and cook the big Mexican meal I've been fantasizing about, it will be accompanied by ice cold beer and sangria...

damn it, there I go welling up again...
Nathan
Another Texan in Munich. What is up with that, I thought I would be the only one... huh.gif

Transplant from Austin. A&M Alum rolleyes.gif

Shiner sounds good, so does a Lonestar tallboy.

What were the directions for that Taco Cabana again?
Ketchup

A&M Alum

That's ok...we'll accept you anyway wink.gif
tchiles
Taco Cabanna! I've been here now 6 months (from Austin too!) and would even kill for Taco Bell now...really getting desperate.

Not to mention a slab of baby back ribs...tender smoked brisket...butchers paper for plates...maybe just a 10 minute shopping spress at HEB...ok I'll stop.
Elfenstar
there is a taco bell at patch barracks in stuttgart. gotta' get someone to sign you on however. also from munich, not very economical is it? i know i could use some good refriend beans. the real runny kind. mmmmm.

i am a bobcat with burnt orange insides (austin is me home). SWT grad however.

aggies on this board? lawrd, help may. unsure.gif
jml
I would walk to stuggart for a pappasitos...fresh chips, salsa, hot tortillas and fajitas with all the fixins...especially the beans ;-)
Nathan

SWT grad however.

Errr..uhm, TSU now dry.gif
Elfenstar
oh i know. my beloved college changed its name. sad.gif sad thing is, i only had one sweatshirt with the SWT logo on it and lost it while hiking at Enchanted Rock over Christmas. what would LBJ say to that?

pappasitos? mmm. i was a fan of el arroyo (believe that is only hill country pertinent) though.
DrivinWest
Whoa, whoa, SWT is now TSU??? TSU is in Houston! Oh wait, Texas Southern right?

Didn't go to school in TX but we often called it the University of Texas at Nashville e.g. Vanderbilt.
Elfenstar
Southwest Texas State University is now Texas State University (since fall 2003). But if you like, UT-Nashville, San Marcos campus. wink.gif
roark
ya´ll´re breaking my heart. I used to miss good Mexican and Tex-Mex food but you can find nearly everything you need to make it yourself. I make rice, beans (borracho, de bolita and refried,) chalupas, flautas, nachos, tostadas, sopa de estrellas, soft chicken and beef tacos, crispy tacos, guacamole, salsa, migas, papas rancheras, chicken fajitas, heuvos rancheros, caldo de pollo and de res, even tortilla soup, its not that bad. I make other stuff too, Pescado Veracruz, calabasa (spelling?)you just need time. I do miss fresh, really fresh cilanto and homemade tortillas but I can buy them or make them myself. Chedder cheese, roma tomatoes, sour cream tortillas corn and flour, jalapenos are all available. i make picadillo and pico de gallo too.Taco Bell? Geez, its not that bad here. It took me a while to learn to get on in the kitchen here but now there isn´t really anything that I miss so bad that I can´t make myself. I do miss H.E.B don´t we all? Anyone ever spent FIESTA or Easter in San Antonio? This Easter I even made Cascarones! (decorated, hollow eggs filled with confetti and broken on the heads of unsuspecting victims) Sorry if this has turned into a rant, it just really breaks my heart to hear people missing Taco Cabana and willing to settle for Taco Bell.
Normally I´m pretty harmless.
Keydeck
Just had an e-mail from a teacher in Texas. She's bringing a class of 18 year olds here for a 2 day visit and was looking for some advice on places to go. She said "We are from Texas and we do like to drink beer".

Anyone wanna meet a couple of dozen Texans and take them for a night out?
Elfenstar
no.
hell no.
no f*cking way.

18-year olds aren't allowed to drink in texas, let alone the u.s. do i really want to subject myself to that?
Keydeck
So I can put you down as a maybe then Elf, yeah? wink.gif
Hazza
I'll go out with a bunch of drunk 18 year old Texans... cool.gif
Keydeck
Great Hazza, thanks. I'm told they're a friendly bunch of lads.
Pascoe
Hmmm...

Keydeck, I am assuming it will be a 'mixed' group and when will Munich be invaded by them???
Hazza
Lads??? ohmy.gif

Oh well in that case, I'm with Elfenstar!!
