I want to make a CD, legally, natch (!) for a party this weekend. Want up to date stuff of the last few years, poppy but a tiny bit intellectual, no No Angels rubbish. But not so heavy as stuff like the Arctic Monkeys.
Any suggestions.
Cheers

Are you talking about music to dance to or for background?

inthat case ANYTHING from the eighties (uptodate stuff ...waz za' then?? )
Timezoner...if you are referring to MY recommendatios that would certainly not be true! My taste is eclectic like my moods and a party should reflect that

Adrian, I just checked your profile to see what sort of person you are to suggest that music...I soon saw, some guy who takes photos of his lower half...in scruffy white trainers... Are you for real...oh yes you're Prussian too!

Stephane Pompougnac "Hotel Costes Vol 10" is superb for background music at parties. Sleek, cool and danceable without being obvious and poppy.

I just love Brazilian jazz to play in the background when I'm entertaining. It's so smooth and easy, but yet funky too. I'm currently listening to this CD in my car and I just can't seem to get enough of it.
According to Amazon's editorial review: "she adds lush, atmospheric vocals to tracks ranging from jazzy and mellow, to lounge club floor fillers."
@englishrose: There's nothing wrong with Jazzanova or being Prussian. And my sneakers aren't scruffy. But I accept that not everyone has the same taste--maybe it's an age thing (had a peek at your profile too)?
And speaking of Nicola Conte: his Jet Sounds would be good too.

Here is some stuff that's a little old and little less old.
Speed it up, take it down, repeat... - that's the key to good background music.
Lots of songs to choose from in each of these artists - go quick tempo, long slow jams, short sing-a-longs - whatever.
Of course this is what I might come up with for some background music, but others probably won't. I'm not too much of a fan of new music these days. (Even though its' all mostly rooted in soul and late 70's punk anyhow - just rearranged a bit.)
Let me know if you want a list of albums/songs or we all could test out the TT server upgrade with a music flame war

Simplified by Simply Red is great. Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder is quite nice.

Bump!
Making 2 CDs now. One kind of elektro-guitarry, one Chee-Z bubble gum pop but kind of ironic.
Any new ideas?

Is this some party that you have organised on myspace, where everyone kills themselves at the end of it? If so, I concur with the idea of playing some morrisey "music". Send me a video of how it all goes down, I've got a few snuff contacts.
Dancey I'd use something from LCD Soundsystem or The Go! Team.
If I wanted to have a good time while telling everyone else to go fuck themselves, I'd either put on Bitches Brew or the 17 minute version of Truckin' from Europe '72.

Ane Brun is pretty nice background music, if people don't know her already they'll definitely be asking you "oh, this is nice, who is it?". Any New Pornographers, clever pop.

I have the song 'Electric Dreams' stuck in my head which might be good for the CD too.
