Do you have to produce a passport when staying in a hotel in France?

yes, normally you do. An ID card is also sufficient.

It's the law, all forms are picked up every night by Le Flics.
No passport/ID, no bed.

Of course not. France is a free country. Also you will drive around without being stopped by the pigs for no reason like in München land.

Go with the 'Yes' answers.
You're a Canadian in Munich. Presumably you do have a passport which you would be carrying with you anyway. So it shouldn't be an issue at all.

You would need to have ID to cross the border anyway, despite Schengen.

not if he drives or takes the train. You only need to show ID to the airline when bording the plane. There is no passport control at the airport.

Regardless of any border controls and whatnot, you should have your passport with you when travelling to a foreign country so I don't really see the point of the question.

If you are doing anything illegal Warna, just use a false passport.

Obviously, you would need the passport for travel or any other form of identification. But they wouldn't normally ask you for a passport, when staying in a hotel in France. I've stayed in a couple of hotels in France (specially in Provence/Cote'd Azur) and there was no passport check. French people are not as obsessed with rules as their neighbours (you know who I'm talkin' about).

It depends on the hotel and their internal regs. I got asked for id by a small family hotel. A Best Western didn't need any id, just my credit card.
