Leave from work to take care of a sick child

What is "Freistellung von der Arbeit zur Pflege kranker Kinder"?

Is it child care leave? I have seen this some time ago, but can't find it now, maybe it's not valid anymore.

I'm posting this under Munich because I don't know if there are regional differences and we live in Munich.

With all the details and conditions left out, it says that as an employee, you may have up to 10 days paid leave per child and parent (maxing out at 25) with a doctors note stating that the child is sick and needs care. (Doubled if you are a single parent)

This is the same as taking off sick when you yourself are ill -- you need a doctor's note. It means you are staying home to care for a sick child. I took some recently when my daughter had pneumonia. My company provides 10 days of "sonderurlaub" for this purpose -- and if I understand correctly, if I exceed that, I can get some sort of payment from my Krankenkasse. But what do you mean by the connection with Elternzeit? That would only apply if you are currently working part-time during your Elternzeit under the old rules (ie three years ofunpaid leave and you can work up to 30 hours per week, now replaced by one year of paid leave).

The first time I came across this, was in 2006, from a pdf file on Elternzeit. But that time I was not planning to take Elternzeit so I didn't really find out more. However now I am in discussion with HR about taking Elternzeit and working part-time, and I asked them if I am entitled to any child care leave during Elternzeit and they said no. So I started searching and found that the newest pdf file (March 08) on Elternzeit does not have this section anymore, hence I thought it is no longer valid.

Then one of the links here, showed that this thing is still valid.

So actually does it mean, we are entitled to child care leave, whether or not you are working part-time (under Elternzeit) or full-time?

Well, considering the idea behind parental leave is to take care of your kid, I can see why they took it out. blink.gif

Sorry, just realized that wasn't very helpful (I blame the headache). Anyway, you might not be entitled to it so if you have a sickly child (as my oldest was) then I would make contingency plans just in case. I never took Elternzeit or Erziehungsurlaub as it was called last century, so I had to take leave and it was a major hassle. Most of the time I just took a day of vacation or comp time. The unpaid leave that the kasse covers doesn't kick in until you have used all your vacation time (fair enough with this much vacation time).

Hi, all comments are appreciated, thanks for taking the time.

For the past 2 years, I have always just taken normal leave (off the 30 days per calendar year) to care for my daughter when she is ill. I work from home. When she is ill, I don't work. So anyway, if one is entitled to child care leave (on Elternzeit or not), then I will see about getting a certification from the pediatrician the next time and forward that link to HR and see what comes up.

Ah - I worked from home as well. I used to just make up the time on weekends or sit next to him and work. I guess I was still too old school to call in sick for him.

I didn't call in sick when she was ill. I took a day (or more) off the 30 vacation days. But now with this new knowledge, I would see if I can take child care leave the next time she is ill, instead of taking the regular vacation days.

Well, as I said, this is really meant for more serious illnesses, so if its just 1 or 2 days for a cold, no. But 3 days or more for something serious -- yeah! There is something on the form about the illness making it necessary to stay home with the child.
