Can anybody tell me if there is an Oz/Kiwi style cafe bar/restaurant in Munich.
Its a bit difficult to describe the style other than being laid back with a sty;e quite different to what normally passes for a cafe bar round here.

A good clue might be if the coffee comes n sizes of cup, mug or bowl.

Thanks

PS Tried looking round the TT restaurant guide but the types didn't really fit.
JoolyBooly
is there such a thing as a kiwi restaurant?! laugh.gif

There are 3 Ozzie bars, if that counts. Outback (?) by Ostbahnhof, Bondi by Karlsplatz, and Ned Kelly in Frauenplatz.

Only a non-Aussie / non-Kiwi could make a request like that, for sure! rolleyes.gif

What is it you're looking for? A cup of Nescafe and a Lamington? laugh.gif

Well the Germans apparently think it's a place you go to eat kangaroo and emu, because of course we know all Aussies eat that.
maddigliana
HA! laugh.gif Wouldn't touch it with a stick ... I wouldn't be able to get all those roadkill images out of my head! (Although I'm yet to see an Emu lying on the side of the road. Anyone seen ever seen one?)

Erm ... sorry to be so disgusting blink.gif

Happy to say that I've eaten both an emu and a kangaroo when I worked in a hotel in Victoria. Lovely stuff! ph34r.gif Wouldnt admit that normally as most germans i speak to are over sensitive about eating/killing animals.

Never did see an emu lying by the side of a road but did meet quite a few fellow travellers that way and the occassional abo! rolleyes.gif mmm thinking back it wasnt until i got to Darwin that I ate my first abo. she was lovely too, only woman I met who drank as much as me back then wub.gif

Kangaroo used to be banned for human consumption in Victoria in the good old days. I probably ate my first kangaroo in South Australia in about 1989 and my second in Germany. Of course, considering that much of what is sold as beef around the world is actually kangaroo, I probably had it more often than I knew.

Jaxon, where are you actually from?! I never thought I would see the names "Moree" and "Goondiwindi" on this forum. I spent the first 12 years of my life in Narrabri dry.gif and then "upgraded" to Tamworth wink.gif (then finally Brisbane aaaand ... Munich!)

It's amazing to come across an Australian in Germany, let alone an Australian who's familiar with country NSW. You've made my day! biggrin.gif

A bowl of coffee?

maddigliana
@jaxon ... unbelievable! There are TWO of you working here in Munich?

I left Narrabri back in 93 but still have a few relatives there. I've spent most of my life in Tamworth ... yes yes ... yeehaa dry.gif (I'm so used to comments about it!)

Well, nice to meet you! (virtually). How long have you been away from Australia?

Just as a change to curry, how about we do a Kiwi night somewhere?

Personally i have no idea where or what it involves.

Anyone got any knowledge in this area that might enlighten me?
Owain Glyndwr
could perhaps expand on exactly what you had in mind with the phrase "do a Kiwi"?
bluedave
I was meaning eat one.

Ohh, perhaps that's not quite clear either. unsure.gif
Renia
Kiwi night would have to be fish and chips, mussels, potato cakes, paua cakes and battered oysters? Eh? Or a roast lamb with all the trimmings, including kumara... smile.gif

Sorry. Didn't realise that you had anything better to do.

I do have a copy of "Black Sheep" on DVD (if I ever get it back). And Flight of the Conchords and more Kiwiana cds that I'd care to think about.
Kiwi food would be (like Renia said) the paua (abalone) fritters, whitebait fritters, the best pies in the world (such as steak and cheese), Vogel's toast, sausage rolls, lovely cakes, pastries and biscuits from the Edmonds Cookbook (both moko and I have copies), salads with Kiwi milk dressing, hokey pokey ice cream, lamb in every conceivable form, bambi burgers from the BBQ with chili jam, crayfish, yum-yums, Peanut Slab and Almond Gold bars, stuff cooked in a hangi, fantastic wines of more types than you'd expect, good brews from the various breweries (except Steinlager which isn't very nice), butter chicken in every form including pies... and real pavlovas.
Could even do a marathon viewing session of NZ's current favourite TV show Outrageous Fortune - I have every episode shown so far.

Except I was reminded yesterday that like Jemaine's ex-girlfriend in the Conchords I kinda lucked out and didn't get the Kiwi...

This is kind of off-topic..but do they have the 'Homemade Australian Ice Cream' chains in Munich yet? I have seen them around in Nürnberg, Köln, Berlin, etc. and always get a good laugh. I mean WTF is homemade australian ice cream?! Australia is a dangerous place to eat ice cream, what with it melting away under the INFERNO that is the sun within 10 minutes and leaving your fingers covered in a sticky soon-to-be-attacked-by-flies covered mess
Bungeesheep
I've also got the good old Edmond's cook book here with me, but you'll have trouble finding anything resembling kumara I'm afraid. I've tried all the types of sweet potatoes that you can buy at Viktualienmarkt and other shops, and unfortunately they are all RUBBISH! sad.gif

If anyone is up for a kiwi(/aussie) night, I'd be glad to make a pav or two!!
Katrina
BioCorner by me does a not bad one, I even had a not terrible one from Tenglecrap last week.
Maybe ask the Aussie biergarten lot to let the NZers in?
