Hello all,
I'm brand new to this forum, and I greet you with the warmest regards.
I'm down here in Bayern, have a T-Online Speedport W 701V, and I'm trying to connect to XBOX Live. I have no other connectivity issues I'm aware of with the phone or my PC. However, for my XBOX 360, XBOX keeps telling me I have an MTU problem on the connection test. I speak German, but not nearly well enough to understand technical manauls such as the one provided to me with the router. I keep going into the settings (einstullung) and verbindung, but I can't understand anything accept some of the numbers as far as download speed. I'm peaking at around 2500-2900 Kbytes. Not sure if that's what MTU is exactly. Actually, I've tried to get a better understanding via the internet on what MTU is, and so far, all I'm getting really is the definition, what it's for, and how to configure it through the "RUN" prompt on start for Windows. Again, technical gargain, and in English, which I still don't understand. I'm able to go on servers on my PC without a problem, and I'm pinging at about 160. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Look forward to further correspondence with you all! Thanks.

Standard MTU for DSL/PPPOE is 1492 bytes
To test the MTU across the network look here -

MTU - Maximum transmission unit. Essentially it's the maximum number of bytes that can be put into an IP packet transmitted from your PC on your connection. It has a close cousin the MRU, which you can guess what the difference is. Usually these are around 1500 bytes but because T-Online use PPPoE a few bytes are stolen by them for their own purposes. Anyway, here's another thread that could be found by searching this board:

Welcome to TT, enjoy your stay.

If standard MTU for DSL is 1492, why do you suppose the interface for XBOX live is saying that my MTU is not high enough? Further, is this MTU adjustment something that I have to do with the actual T-Online DSL interface installed on my desktop? Also, is MTU a term that's universal globally, or is called something else in German?

I had similar problems with my Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii, basically, that Speedsport router is shit. I managed to get online after updating the firmware of the router.
You can configure your router via the web interface, i.e. if the IP address of your router is 192.168.1.1 then open your browser and connect to
http://192.168.1.1 but you will need the user and pass. I do not remember the defaults, but a
Google search might help you, maybe it is something like user: admin pass: 0000
But, I recommend you getting a better router if you are a heavy user. That's why I did.
PS. The MTU is called MTU

Krieg, thanks, I'll try that out. What other router do you recommend?

Agreed. the Speedport Routers are total crap.. Stick with a nice AVM Fritzbox and you won't have any problems..

Where do I get Fritzboxes? Local electronic shops?

Not an easy answer, it depends on the setup you want. A good router normally does not include a modem then you will need 2 devices and some people do not like that, but there are some of them with modem included. I myself only buy Linksys and Buffalo products.
Did you find the MTU configuration already? Try changing that before. Try with different values from 1492 up to 1500.
Edit: The Fritzbox is a good advise as well.

Interesting comment, given that many Speedport routers are designed and built by AVM who also make the Frizboxes. In fact a number are technically identical...

Depends on the model.. Some are made cheaper (Parts) than AVM's only devices.
