The iPhone 3G comes out July 11th in Germany. Anyone else been thinking of trading up? I've got a hacked iPhone I'm using now on a pay as you go network but thinking of signing a contract for the new one (so I can finally use the data options). My concern is the structure: http://www.t-mobile.de/iphone/showTariffs.do

It seems from the fine print that there is a 300MB limit on data for the 50 EUR/Month plan. Someone with better German want to confirm that for me?

No. If you exceed 300Mb in a month then your data-rate reduces to max 64Kbit/s (download) and 16Kbits/s (upload)

With the new iPhone, none of the carriers are offering unlimited data in the standard plans anymore..
Most all are limited, and if you want unlimited data (If avail/offered) your must pay extra may for it.

Depending on which pay as you go provider/SIM you have, you can get a data connection if you
configure the iphone with the correct connection details.

Sorry, already promised the girlfriend it. Plus it was well loved and not really cosmetically that nice.

Thanks for the reply though. Now onto figuring out how much usage is appropriate for me. Next question though is, how hard is it to get out of a contract if I have to leave Germany? Anyone have experience with that?

What do you mean? The plans in Germany (except the S one) are all unlimited data, but after a certain amount (300mb and upwards) you get your speed cut to 64kbit/s up and 16kbit/s down. Note that this was the case too with the first iPhone, and according to forums, T-Mobile never enforced this limit. With the 3G one though, I can imagine that they might.

Most of the carriers around the world do seem to be putting limits on data, but in the UK it is truly unlimited data as well as in the US.

I've already ordered it on the S plan, which gives me 500mb data which will hopefully be enough for me.

Just make sure you read the fine print... I recall also seeing a per KB/MB charge after the limit in addition the slowdown mentioned above..
If you compare the price for the Orig iphone and contracts to the new, you will see that with the new contracts your actually getting less for more $$$.
Its not just T-Mobile either...

I just want to clarify that when the 300MB limit is exceeded (in a month), the speed is reduced only for that particular month - not indefinitely :-)

Already ordered it? Where can you pre-order? I entered my email address on their website to be informed but they haven't contacted me yet... Spoke to the business customer service and they also said that I have to wait until the 11th July to order one...

There is only a limit and per megabyte charge on the S plan, which is clearly stated. The new plans are identical to the old plans, except that in the M plan you get 300mb instead of 200mb before getting capped, and with the new plans, the phones are substantially cheaper. The 3G deal in Germany is definitely cheaper than the old one.

You might be thinking of America, where they need to pay an extra $10 a month. For them, it does work out more, but then you're paying the $10 more because you're getting a 3G data rate, not a EDGE one. This was always AT&T's pricing ($20 for EDGE, $30 for 3G), so it hasn't got anything to do with the iPhone.

I signed up to be informed straight after the WWDC speech on the 9th of June, then I got an email about pre ordering and that if you were one of the first 1000 you'd get it on the 11th. As soon as I got the email, I immediately ordered, so I would hope to be one of these first 1000. I got a confirmation, but the link in the email to see the status of the order says there has been a error. I should really call them to see what is going on.

EDIT: I've just had a look - to me it looks like you can order them here: http://www.t-mobile.de/iphone/

I need some help: I'm looking for a German Store chains ( such as MediaMarkt) who sells his product by the internet too. I mean I woul likme to buy on line a phone and a television paying by credit card.
Thankyou.
Kätzchen
you can buy this phone+contract directly from the t-mobile website I believe. Mediamarkt will probably not be stocking it.

having said that I did just come across this article! (was looking for something else totally unrelated)

Most places are still sold out of the iPhone. I was told by the T-mobile shop where I bought mine that they received 5 on the launch day to sell. That's just stupid.

On a separate note, this issoroirad is 100% dodgy for sure.. he continually posts that he wants to buy things online in Germany with a credit card. He's looking to scam someone with a ripped off credit card for sure. His posts and account should be deleted.

Has anyone successfully used the iphone (1.1.4 or 3g) for VOIP, . I'm out to buy one today, but I was just rereading all the small print on the contract and noticing that instant messaging and VOIP are not included in the data counts. These were the two primary reasons I had planned to get the phone, so now I'm hesitant. I assume this restriction applied to first generation contracts as well, so I was just wondering if anyone has used VOIP or instant messaging on their iphone that and seen additional charges and if so, how much?

There is already a client on the App Store called "Truphone". It is free, but it forces you to use them as a provider. I haven't installed it cause I don't want to register with them, I'm waiting for a proper SIP client, so I can use whoever I want.

Anyway, if you want to use it, you need to use it over Wifi.. I very much doubt there will ever be an official a VoIP that will allow you to use it over the 3G network. Even if one comes out, you can't run applications in the background, so you could only use it for outgoing phone calls, not incoming ones.

I've heard the lag over the 3G network is pretty bad though, and not really suitable for VoIP calls anyway.
Kätzchen
indeed, read through their terms and conditions and decided no smile.gif
