Hi,

I'm trying to get a high speed internet service provider in Frankfurt and I've checked the websites for Base, Alice, and 1&1 so far, but all seem to require 24 month contract and I'd prefer not to do more than a 1 year contract. Does anyone have any recommendations. I really am not aware of any other providers in Frankfurt other than the three I've checked. Thanks for your help.

Best,
Nathan

Hi. If you are connected via cable from Unitymedia you can get a fairly good connection from them http://www.unitymedia.de/

I'm with the cable people (Unity Media - formerly iesy hessen) and have no complaints. Two other possible options would be adsl with Telekom or a 3G dongle/USB stick from Vodafone/T-mobile. I know nowt about nowt at the best of times, but in this case, I know nowt in particular about tariffs and minimum contract periods for any of these.

Edit: 3G dongle = HSDPA USB modem. Apparently.

Hi Dear,

Alice does not have any fixed contract. You have to tell them just one month before that u want to stop the service. I have taken it personally and I find the speed quite reasonable.

Also if you are quiting the country you have to fill a form and get it signed from rathöuse.. to break the contract (I think accor guys told me that u can confirm)

Another vote for Unitymedia here. The last time I checked, they had a 12 month contract. But add on any premium services and it becomes 24 months.

are there any other internet providers with short contract times? (other than Alice).

by short i mean like 1 month

I was looking at ISPs and phones too and found this site: http://www.billiger-surfen.de/

It allows you to compare your requirements with what's on offer, although I can't vouch for availability as I'm new around these parts. It does appear. though, that Alice is the only month-by-month option.

Let me know if you know better or have any further advice.

Howdy,

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice on which ISP to go with here in Frankfurt.

I was initially going to go with Alice, because I hear that they do a pay-as-you-go-monthly-kinda-thing, but I've not been hearing good things about Alice! I've heard shes a bit rubbish!
The only reason I was going to do the monthly thing was because I'm not going to be in this apartment for very long, and I've been warned about contacts and getting out of them over here.

I need to get a mobile phone at some point soon too, I wasn't going to get a bundle, but if anyone knows of any good offers I would definetly consider it!

Any advice you can offer would be really helpful.

Cheers

I am trying to use Alice and haven't been very happy with their service and it isn't even set up yet.

What was the problem you are having with Alice? My agent has just signed me up with them for their Alice Light Max package (DSL 16 Mb + phone). I think it says (as in I can't read the German very well) that they will take 3-4 weeks to get me set-up. Don't move for another 2 weeks, and my computer won't arrive straight away, so suits me okay.

There is another company that does not do 24 month contracts. It is called Congstar. I used this website to compare packages...

Hope this helps.

I'm no tekkie, so about the actual spead and the configuration options and all that crap, I am useless. But that aside, based on a my level of satisfaction, I always recommend Alice when asked.

I've used them for almost 3 years now and have had NO complaints - in comparison to about 100 complaints from the 3 months I was with TKom. The others I can't really comment on except to say I've heard Unity is less bad than most others.

I signed up because of the no minimum contract length, but since have been pleasantly surprised. One major surprise was that I have had the same account follow me seamlessly from 1st apartment in Berlin, to 2nd apartment in Berlin, to 3rd apartment in Frankfurt. No service interruption or billing cock-ups. Nothing. My bank didn't even hit that level of competence over the same period. What I also found good from Alice is that the two times I "had" to call in, they actually answered my (usually dumb or unnecessary) questions relatively intelligently and quickly... and, get this, politely!! And that's despite the fact that I was relatively aggressive and accusatory to start with (hangover from TKom telephone experiences). Again, compared with TKom, a dream service.

Cheers

did they do it in english or german? ( i mean, answered your questions )

I would also be interested to know if they can answer questions in English!

If I recall correctly, the first call started in my broken German, and then the Alice guy switched to decent english. But the second was only German, but they took to time to explain stuff so I could understand which was the probably the key to my feeling relatively well treated by them to this point. I'm not sure if I asked for English after the first call, though, so you might have to get lucky with the one who actually takes your call.
