A good friend of ours, Martin, is heading off tomorrow on a world trip for about 8 months and taking in India, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Easter Island, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Spain and finally back to Dublin on July 20th of next year.

Martin, aka Smithy, aka Lads, aka The Cute Cavan Hoor, aka The Average Irish Lad Abroad is a young impressionable chap of a meagre 40 years.

We’ve decided to keep as close an eye as we can on his exploits so here’s a link to the A.I.L.A. website.

I’m sure he’d appreciate if you could maybe drop a note into the guestbook with any words of encouragement, tips on the various locations or whatever that you can think of.

The site will be updated whenever he's awake and sober enough to send mails in.

The inimitable Smithy has been gone for less than a week and now finds himself in Udaipur (nappy sounding place) in India and already he's managed two diary updates.

Thanks very much to the TTers who've dropped by the site and signed the guestbook to wish the lad well on his journey.

Our man in India is still doing his thing. His latest update includes his time in Pushkar, castles, a wedding and 'erm another picture of a toilet. Have a looksee at the site to see how he's getting on.

As Christmas approaches spare a thought for a lad on his own, all alone in the world with only a billion or so Indians for company.

"Delhi is truly fucking animal, and hundreds of touts and scammers were waiting..they do everything to try and say your pre-booked hotel is burned down or closed to get them to a hotel of their choice.I had a hotel pre-booked. "

"Bouncer approaches me and says 20 rupee--I ask why? he say "cause I am smart boy !!' Lord I dont know what he was on about...I race up the road and that was end of bar scene for me in India. India does not have a bar scene worth mentioning. Though Rats prosper !! "

"This religion ties in with the CAST system which is the social hierarchy in India. Which basically is a breakup or class system.

Basically:
Braham - priest at the top
Kshatriya - warriors
Vaishya - merchants
Sudra - pesants
Dalits (UNTOUCHANBLES)

And indians consider tourists DALITS !!! and hence you can see why no Indian women will ever marry a UNTOUCHABLE. Even today most 'jacks' cleaners are from the UNTOUCHABLE category and this caste system is very much in use today. Let them kid you not. "

India - Done.
Thailand - Well Done.
Cambodia - Arrived yesterday.

After a couple of updates from Bangkok, Pataya & Koh Chang our boy arrived yesterday in Cambodia. Lots to read and lots of piccies to see in the last few updates..

Life here in Koh Chang can be depicted as follows...Wake up in tats around 2pm...crawl onto the beach...planting meself down opp Koh Chang Diving shop...some UK/IRL lads dont even have a towel to lie on...the germans have the full scale beach mat/towel and walkman and they either have a thai lass or their claudia schiefer lookalike with them...

Back in Pataya after some time in Cambodia. Have a looksee at the site for three pages of Cambobia updates. Warning: some may find it distasteful...or as the man himself said...

My reports from Cambodia have upset some people. I advise that I do not intend to write reports based on a view of say (Mary from Tipperary who just got married to Frank who works in a bank with a Semi D nearly completed in Ardee and now are in thailand/Cambodia on honeymoon.) I am a bottom feeder, I report from the real action.The brothels, the bars, the drugs, the losers. Basically I am a lad in the 'sewers' of Asia and thats where the action is. If you dont like the reports then, dont read em !!!

Here's a couple of letters received from his Thai fanclub.

Dear Martin

I love you and miss you too much.Now I have problem. I tell you before Buffalo me sick.Now it die.Fall down dead in middle of the field.Unfortunately when it fall,it land on papa and break his leg 3 places.Now he no work.Brother me makes stretcher from bamboo he take from roof of house. Roof collaspes rain come
in.Brother take papa to hospital,he crashes on way home.brother says me to blame.Police say he pay big money.Police car broke.Now mama have heart problem. Doctor say she need triple road pass.I now understand but doctor say you farang understand. I wait for you come back Bangkok. If you cannot help me then I must sleep with man many many farangs. The old people in my village Chantaburi say you to blame if you had sent me money for sick buffalo then then it not die and, papa not break leg , brother not crash and mama ok.

Please send me 200,000, baht for my bank.papa fix 10,000, roof 30000, police car 100,000, mam fix 50000. I take off 2000 baht for sell buffalo meat but have to
pay hospital bill for 12 people who get food posioning from meat.I not know Ireland money but my friend say 50baht one euro. This mean you send me 4000eur.little money for you. I love you too much and I wait money from you LEK.

How are you? I hope you are well and to be happiness on your vacation in Australia...I will memory you on my though all the time...Although we just to know but I feel to be happy and nice to meet you...
Martin...I hope you don't forget me you have many day holiday you very good luck can have time yourself and travelling often not the same me...I never go outside Thailand and trip only work hard we just to know but you very good with me...
Today I go internet shop open new e-mail for you only one...I never open e-mail for another man because I not well English and if I want to send e-mail to you I can't send Thail language to you because if I send e-mail Thai language you can't understand I must to go internet shop write Thai language and them translation for me but I must to pay more money for translation every time when I want to send e-mail to you...
Martin you know I not enough money for to do other thing because I have many respon and take care myself but I will try send e-mail to you and keep money for translation letter for you...I would like to see you to be happy and I will waiting for you come back to me the same you say...Hope to hear from you soon...Please take care of yourself and have a good time...
